How to Get to Playa Las Terrenas

Getting to Playa Las Terrenas is part of the adventure and, fortunately, increasingly accessible. The most common way for international visitors is to fly into Presidente Juan Bosch International Airport (AZS), also known as El Catey, which is about a 30-40 minute drive from Las Terrenas. From there, we can take a taxi, a private transfer service, or, for the more adventurous, a 'guagua' (public bus) that will take us directly to the town.

Another popular option is to fly into Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, the capital. From Santo Domingo, the road trip to Las Terrenas takes approximately two and a half to three hours, thanks to the modern Autopista del Nordeste (also known as the Juan Pablo II Highway). We can rent a car, which gives us a lot of freedom to explore the surroundings, or use comfortable bus services like Caribe Tours or Expreso Bávaro which will drop us off in Santa Bárbara de Samaná or Sánchez, from where we can take local transport to Las Terrenas. The road is scenic, passing through green, mountainous landscapes, making the journey another part of the Dominican Republic experience.

The Sand and Water

The sand at Playa Las Terrenas is, in a word, spectacular. We would describe it as fine and of a pale golden hue that, under the Caribbean sun, shines with a magical intensity. It's so soft that it invites you to walk barefoot for hours, feeling its delicacy under your feet. Along its extensive kilometers, the sand remains clean and welcoming, perfect for building sandcastles, enjoying a morning walk, or simply relaxing under the shade of a palm tree.

From small 'chiringuitos' serving refreshing drinks and local snacks, to more sophisticated restaurants with international menus and, of course, an incredible variety of fresh fish and seafood. There's nothing like enjoying a cocktail at sunset with your feet in the sand.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: At many of the establishments and beach bars, as well as at some public points, we can find showers to rinse off the salt and chlorine, and clean toilets for our comfort. It's an important detail we greatly appreciate.
• Parking: For those of us arriving by car, there are parking areas available, both paid and free in some areas, making access to the beach easy.

• Lifeguards: Although the waters are usually calm, in the busier areas and at hotels, there is often a lifeguard presence, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially when traveling with children.
