How to get to Praia Grande de Porto Covo

Getting to Praia Grande de Porto Covo is an integral part of the adventure, and the journey itself immerses us in the beauty of the Alentejo. The most comfortable and recommended way for us is, without a doubt, by car. From Lisbon, the trip takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, taking the A2 south and then the A26 and IC33 towards Sines and Porto Covo. The roads are in excellent condition, and the landscape that accompanies us along the way, with its vast plains and cork oaks, is simply captivating.

Directions from Lisbon

• Take the A2 (Autoestrada do Sul) towards Setúbal/Algarve.
• Continue on the A2 until the exit towards Sines/Santiago do Cacém (A26/IC33).
• Follow the signs towards Sines and then towards Porto Covo. Once in Porto Covo, the signs for Praia Grande are clear and will guide us directly to the parking lot.

Directions from the Algarve

• From the south, the journey is a bit longer, approximately 2 to 2.5 hours from Faro. Take the A22 (Via do Infante) west and then the A2 north to the Sines/Santiago do Cacém exit.

Parking

Praia Grande de Porto Covo has a spacious and relatively well-organized Parking area, especially outside the high season. During the summer months, particularly in August, it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. The parking lot is conveniently located, a short walk from the sand, making access easy, especially if we're loaded with umbrellas and coolers. There is no direct and frequent public transport to the beach, so a car is practically essential for a hassle-free visit.

The sand and the water

Praia Grande de Porto Covo welcomes us with one of the most attractive features of the Alentejo coast: its sand. Here, the tipo_arena is predominantly 'fine' and golden, incredibly soft to the touch and perfect for long barefoot walks or for children to build sandcastles. The beach's extension, with an approximate longitud_metros of 400 meters, offers ample space for everyone, even on the busiest days, allowing us to always find a quiet corner. The 'tipo_suelo' is, as expected, pure 'sand', with no annoying rocks to hinder walking or playing.

The Atlantic waters

The waters at Praia Grande de Porto Covo are, as in much of the Portuguese Atlantic coast, cool and invigorating. Their clarity is remarkable, allowing us to easily see the sandy bottom. The Blue Flag, which this beach proudly flies, is irrefutable proof of the excellent water quality and commitment to the environment. Although the waves can be moderate and fun for 'bodyboarding' or simply playing, they are rarely excessively large, making it a safe place to swim. However, we always recommend caution and paying attention to the instructions of the Lifeguards.

The water temperature, while not as warm as in the Mediterranean, is perfectly pleasant for a refreshing dip during the hot summer months. For those who feel the cold more, a light wetsuit can be a good option, but most of us will find the water ideal for relieving the heat of the sun. The combination of fine sand and clean, cool waters creates an idyllic setting to enjoy a full day of sun and sea.
