How to Get to Praia del Magoito

Getting to Praia do Magoito is part of the adventure and, honestly, it's easier than one might imagine, though it requires a bit of planning. Given its location on a more natural and less urbanized stretch of coast, the most comfortable and recommended option for us is by car.

By Car

If we're coming from Lisbon, the journey takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. We must take the A5 towards Cascais and then follow the signs to Sintra. Once in Sintra or its surroundings, signs for Magoito or the beaches in the area will guide us without problems. The road that descends to the beach is picturesque and offers us spectacular ocean views as we approach. Upon arrival, we find a relatively spacious parking lot at the top of the cliff, with stairs and a steep path leading down to the sand. It's important to consider that, during high season or on sunny weekends, this parking lot can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. The convenience of having our own vehicle allows us to freely explore the surroundings and other nearby beaches on the same day.

By Public Transport

Although it's not the most direct or practical option, it is possible to reach Praia do Magoito by public transport if we prefer not to drive. From Lisbon, we would first have to take a train to Sintra. The Sintra train station is a central point for bus connections. From there, we can look for the bus line heading to the beaches in the area, such as Azenhas do Mar or Colares, and ask the driver if it stops at Magoito or nearby. However, the frequencies are not very high, especially outside the summer season, and the bus stop may be a considerable distance from the beach, which would involve an extra walk. Therefore, for us, the flexibility and comfort offered by the car are unbeatable for visiting this special corner of the Portuguese coast.

Praia do Magoito surprises us from the very first moment with its particular characteristics, especially regarding its sand and the ocean water. It's a distinctive element that sets it apart from many other beaches on the Portuguese coast and that, undoubtedly, contributes to its wild and unique charm.

The first thing we notice when descending to the beach is the color of its sand. Unlike the bright gold we usually find on other coasts, the sand of Praia do Magoito is a dark gray tone, almost black in some spots, sprinkled with shiny particles that reflect the sunlight. This color is due to its high mineral content, especially iron, which gives it a very particular appearance and a different feel. For us, it's like walking on a natural canvas, where every step feels unique. The texture is predominantly fine, although we can find areas with slightly coarser grains mixed in, making it a mixed sand in some areas, but overall it's very pleasant underfoot. It is said that this mineralized sand has therapeutic properties, being beneficial for the skin and joints, a curious detail that adds an extra to our visit. It's a pleasure to sit and watch how the sun plays with the glints of the sand, creating a constant visual spectacle.

The Water: Fresh, Clear, and with Atlantic Character

As for the water, Praia do Magoito offers us the typical characteristics of the Portuguese Atlantic: it is fresh and crystal clear. Even on the hottest summer days, the water temperature is usually refreshing, ideal for a dip that awakens our senses. The clarity of the water is remarkable, allowing us to see the bottom in the shallower areas, which is always a good indicator of the quality of the marine environment. However, it's essential to remember that we are on a coast open to the Atlantic. This means that the waves can be considerable and the currents, at times, strong. For this reason, Praia do Magoito is highly appreciated by surfers and bodyboarders, who find in its waves the perfect challenge. For less experienced swimmers or families with young children, we always recommend exercising extreme caution and staying in the areas monitored by the lifeguards.
