Introduction
We delve into the fascinating world of Praia da Nazaré, a destination that has certainly captured the imagination of travelers and ocean lovers from all over the planet. Located in the heart of the Leiria region, on the central coast of Portugal, this beach is not just another on the vast Portuguese coastline; it is an icon, a place where the untamed force of nature meets the rich cultural heritage of a fishing village that has managed to preserve its essence over the centuries. When we think of Portugal beaches, the image of Nazaré with its colossal waves and its fisherwomen in the traditional 'sete saias' (seven skirts) immediately comes to mind.
Our visit to Praia da Nazaré is always an experience that fills us with wonder and admiration. It doesn't matter if it's the first time we set foot on it or if we've already had the privilege of returning; there is always something new to discover, a different perspective that captivates us. Here, the Atlantic manifests itself in its fullest expression, creating mountains of water that challenge the most daring surfers and, at the same time, gently caressing the shore of the main beach, offering a haven of peace for those seeking a day of relaxation under the sun. It is this duality, this ability to be extreme and welcoming at the same time, that makes Nazaré a truly unique place.
Beyond the waves, which are undoubtedly its global calling card, the Leiria beach of Nazaré offers us a journey into the past. Walking through its cobbled streets, observing fishing nets drying in the sun and the colorful boats on the sand, or climbing up to the famous Sítio to enjoy the panoramic views, transports us to a time when life was intrinsically linked to the sea. It is a place where tradition can be felt on every corner, where the hospitality of its people envelops us, and where the beauty of the landscape invites reflection and enjoyment. Get ready for a complete immersion in one of Portugal's most precious coastal treasures.
How to get to Praia da Nazaré
Getting to Praia da Nazaré is relatively easy, given its popularity and excellent location on Portugal's central coast. We have tried several options and they all have their advantages, depending on our starting point and the flexibility we seek in our trip.
By car
For many, the most comfortable and practical option is to arrive by car. The Portuguese road network is modern and well-maintained. From Lisbon, the capital, the journey is approximately 120 kilometers and is done mainly via the A8 motorway, heading north. The trip usually takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. From Porto, the journey is a bit longer, about 220 kilometers, also via the A8, and takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Signage is clear and will take us directly to Nazaré. Once there, finding parking can be a challenge in high season, but there are several paid car parks and regulated parking zones. It is advisable to arrive early if visiting in summer.
By bus
If we prefer not to drive, the bus is an excellent alternative. The Rede Expressos company offers regular connections from Lisbon (Sete Rios or Oriente stations) and Porto, as well as from other major Portuguese cities. The buses are comfortable and the service is efficient. The journey from Lisbon takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes, while from Porto it can extend to about 3 hours. Nazaré's bus station is conveniently located near the town center and the Praia da Nazaré beach, making it easy to access our accommodation and main attractions.
By train
Although Nazaré does not have its own train station, the nearest station is Valado dos Frades, about 6 kilometers away. From there, we can take a local bus or a taxi to reach our final destination. Train connections are usually less direct than bus connections, especially from large cities, so we usually opt for the bus if we are not traveling by car. However, if we enjoy the train journey and are not in a hurry, it can be a picturesque option.
The sand and the water
Praia da Nazaré welcomes us with a stretch of fine, golden sand that blends with the waters of the Atlantic. It is a beach with two very distinct faces, and both are equally fascinating.
The sand
The sand on the main beach is, as we have already mentioned, fine and of a golden color that shines under the sun. It is the ideal type of sand to spread out our towel, build sandcastles with the children, or simply walk barefoot feeling the soft texture under our feet. Along its approximately 1500 meters in length, we find enough space not to feel crowded, even on the busiest days. The type of ground is predominantly sand, making it very comfortable for bathing and general enjoyment. The dunes that once characterized part of the coast have been largely urbanized, but the sandy essence remains.
The water
The waters of Praia da Nazaré are those of the Atlantic Ocean, which means they are usually cool, even in the height of summer. However, their temperature is perfectly bearable and, in fact, is very refreshing on hot days. The water quality is excellent, as evidenced by the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that assures us we are on a clean, well-managed beach with high standards of environmental quality and services. The water's clarity varies depending on currents and weather conditions, but it is generally clear and suitable for bathing.
It is crucial to differentiate between the main beach, which is more sheltered and suitable for swimming, and the famous Praia do Norte. In the
