How to Get to Praia de Ponta Ruiva

Getting to Praia de Ponta Ruiva is relatively straightforward, although it requires a little extra effort that's well worth it. As it's located on Ilha de Faro, the main access is via a bridge connecting the island to the mainland, starting from the city of Faro. Once on the island, we can follow the main road that runs along the coastal strip.

By Car

If we choose to drive, the journey from central Faro to Ilha de Faro takes approximately 10-15 minutes. There are several parking areas along Praia de Faro, especially near the main access points. To reach Ponta Ruiva, we'll need to head towards the western end of the island. We can park in the designated areas and then continue on foot or by bicycle along a path that will lead us to this more secluded section of the beach. The walk is pleasant and allows us to discover the landscape at our own pace.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular buses connecting central Faro with Praia de Faro during the high season. Once at the final bus stop at Praia de Faro, we can enjoy a pleasant walk along the coast towards the west until we reach the Ponta Ruiva area. It's an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and the views without worrying about parking.

The Sand and Water

Praia de Ponta Ruiva delights us with the typical fine, golden sand of the Algarve, soft to the touch and perfect for long barefoot walks. It's sand that glistens under the sun, inviting us to spread out our towel and enjoy a day of relaxation. Unlike other more exposed beaches, the sand here tends to be a bit more natural, with dunes and native vegetation that give it a wild and pristine touch.

The waters of Praia de Ponta Ruiva are generally calm and crystal clear, ideal for a refreshing swim. Being at the confluence with the Ria Formosa, the currents are usually gentle, making it a safe option for swimming. • Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: In the more central areas of Praia de Faro, it's possible to rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers for greater comfort, although at Ponta Ruiva we prefer to bring our own to maintain the feeling of freedom.
• Equipment Rental: Near the main access points, we can find options to rent equipment for water sports, such as SUP boards or kayaks, although for Ponta Ruiva the main activity tends to be more contemplative.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit Praia de Ponta Ruiva is during spring (April-May) and early summer (June), or in late summer and early autumn (September-October). During these periods, the climate in the Algarve is exceptionally pleasant, with warm but not excessively hot temperatures, and radiant sunshine that invites you to enjoy the beach.
