Located in the charming municipality of Faro, in the province of the same name, this beach is undoubtedly one of Portugal's most precious jewels. We, as beach tourism experts, have visited countless coastlines, but Praia de Alvor possesses a particular magic that makes it stand out. When we think of Faro beaches, the image of Praia de Alvor immediately comes to mind. Its extensive stretch of golden sand, bathed by the warm and serene waters of the Atlantic, is a constant invitation to rest and enjoyment. Here, time seems to slow down, allowing us to disconnect from routine and immerse ourselves completely in the relaxed atmosphere that characterizes it. It is a place where sunrises paint the sky in pastel tones and sunsets offer a spectacle of colors that is etched in memory, leaving us wanting to return again and again to this coastal paradise.

How to get to Praia de Alvor

Getting to Praia de Alvor is relatively easy, especially if we fly into Faro Airport (FAO), the main airport in the Algarve region. From there, we have several options that adapt to our preferences and budget.

By car

For us, the most comfortable and flexible option is to rent a car directly at the airport. The journey to Alvor is approximately 75 kilometers and usually takes about 50 minutes, depending on traffic. We must take the A22 (Via do Infante) towards Portimão/Lagos and then follow the signs to Alvor. The road is in excellent condition and the scenery along the way is typically Algarvian, with orange groves and small villages. Once in Alvor, we will find several parking areas, some free and others paid, especially near the beach and in the town itself.

By public transport

If we prefer not to drive, we can opt for public transport. From Faro Airport, we will first have to take a bus or taxi to the train or bus station in Faro. From Faro bus station, there are regular services that will take us to Portimão, and from Portimão, we can take another local bus to Alvor. Although it is a more economical option, it requires more time and patience, as it involves transfers. Buses in the Algarve are reliable, but their schedules can be less frequent outside the high season.

Taxi or private transfer

Another alternative, especially if we are traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage, is to book a taxi or private transfer from the airport. It is the fastest and most comfortable option after a rental car, and they will drop us off right at the door of our accommodation in Alvor. The cost is higher, but the convenience often justifies it.

The sand and water

Praia de Alvor wins us over from the first moment with its impressive expanse of fine, golden sand. It is one of those Portugal beaches where we can walk for miles and miles without the sand becoming uncomfortable, perfect for morning or evening strolls. The quality of the sand is exceptional, soft and clean, ideal for children to play and build castles without any issues. Even on the busiest days, its vast expanse always allows us to find a quiet corner to spread out our towel and enjoy the sun.

The waters of Praia de Alvor are another of its great attractions. They are usually very calm and shallow near the shore, making it a safe place for the little ones to swim. The cleanliness and clarity of the water are remarkable, and we can often see the seabed with the naked eye. The water temperature, influenced by the Atlantic current, is pleasant during the summer months, inviting long dips. It is a beach with a ground type: sand throughout, which facilitates access and comfort when entering and exiting the sea. The absence of rocks or pebbles in the main bathing area is a plus we always appreciate.

To the east of the beach, the area transforms into a fascinating system of dunes and wooden walkways that lead us to the Ria de Alvor, an estuary of great ecological value. Here, the landscape changes and offers us a wonderful contrast between the immensity of the ocean and the tranquility of the estuarine waters, a true paradise for bird watching and nature lovers.

We find a beach that has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the quality of its waters, safety, and environmental management. This gives us great peace of mind and confidence.
