How to Get to Playa Akumal
Getting to Playa Akumal is an adventure in itself, part of the experience that leads us to this paradise. Strategically located between the popular destinations of Playa del Carmen and Tulum, access is relatively easy from any point in the Riviera Maya.
From Cancún or Playa del Carmen
If we are coming from Cancún or Playa del Carmen, we have several options at our disposal:
- Rental car: This is perhaps the most comfortable and flexible option. From Cancún, we will take federal highway 307 heading south towards Tulum. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Cancún and about 30-40 minutes from Playa del Carmen. There is clear signage for the turnoff to Akumal. Once we turn off the main highway, we will follow a short road to the main entrance of the bay. It's important to consider that, upon arrival, we will find paid parking options.
- Colectivos (shared vans): This is an economical and popular option among locals and tourists. We can take a colectivo from the colectivo terminal in Playa del Carmen (located on Calle 2 between Avenida 10 and Avenida 15) or from various points along federal highway 307 in Cancún. We simply tell the driver we are going to 'Akumal'. They will drop us off at the main entrance to the bay, right next to the highway. From there, it's a short 5-10 minute walk to the beach.
- ADO Bus: Although ADO is an excellent option for long trips, it's not the most direct for Akumal. ADO buses will drop us off at the stop on federal highway 307, and from there we will need to take a colectivo or a taxi to reach the bay. Generally, colectivos are more convenient for this leg.
- Private taxi or transport service: For those seeking greater comfort and a direct transfer, a private taxi or a pre-booked transport service is ideal. The price will be higher, but it will drop us off directly at the beach entrance, without worries. It's a good option if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or with small children.
From Tulum
If our base is Tulum, the journey is even shorter and simpler:
- Rental car: About 20-25 minutes north on federal highway 307.
- Colectivos: Very frequent from downtown Tulum. They will drop us off at the entrance to Akumal in about 15-20 minutes.
- Taxi: Fast and convenient, although a bit more expensive than the colectivo.
The Sand and the Water
When we talk about Playa Akumal, we cannot help but marvel at the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters, elements that make it a dream destination among the beaches of Quintana Roo.
The Sand: a white canvas under our feet
The sand of Akumal is, without a doubt, one of its most outstanding features. It is an immaculate white color with a fine texture, almost like flour. Walking barefoot, we feel an incomparable softness under our feet, a feeling of purity that invites relaxation and forgetting daily stress. This sand, of coral origin, does not get excessively hot under the Caribbean sun, making it perfect for strolling at any time of day, building sandcastles with the children, or simply lying down to enjoy the sun. The width of the beach allows that, even on days with more visitors, we can always find a quiet corner for ourselves.
The Water: a mirror of turquoise crystal
But if the sand is impressive, the water of Akumal is simply magical. Of a vibrant and crystal-clear turquoise hue, it allows us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several meters deep. The waters of the bay are notably calm and shallow near the shore, protected by a barrier of coral reefs that act as natural breakwaters. This characteristic makes them ideal for bathing with small children and for those who don't feel comfortable
