Its beaches, mainly the main Mazunte beach and the calmer Playa Rinconcito, provide us with diverse settings for every moment of the day. How to Get to Playa Mazunte

Getting to Playa Mazunte is part of the adventure and offers us several options, depending on our starting point and budget. If we're coming from Oaxaca City, the state capital, we can opt for a flight to the airports of Puerto Escondido (PXM) or Bahías de Huatulco (HUX), both approximately an hour and a half from Mazunte by car. From either of these airports, we can take a shared taxi, a private taxi, or even a local bus that will drop us off in Pochutla, from where it's easy to take another taxi or colectivo to Mazunte. Shared taxis are an economical option and allow us to share the ride with other travelers.

If we prefer a more terrestrial and economical option from Oaxaca City, we can take an overnight bus or a shared van. Bus lines, like ADO, take us to Pochutla or San Pedro Pochutla, and from there it's a short taxi or colectivo ride. The vans, which are usually faster but perhaps less comfortable for long trips, can drop us off directly in Mazunte. The road trip from Oaxaca City is scenic, though with many curves, and takes us through the Sierra Madre del Sur, offering spectacular views. Driving our own car is another alternative, giving us the freedom to explore at our own pace, although the roads can be challenging in some sections. Federal Highway 200 is the main artery connecting the coast and will guide us to our destination.

The Sand and Water

The beaches of Mazunte welcome us with golden-toned sand, fine and soft to the touch, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel its warmth under our feet. It's the kind of sand that sifts between our toes with each step, making every walk a sensory experience. On the main Mazunte beach, the sand is more extensive and open, while at Playa Rinconcito, the bay is smaller and more sheltered, with equally fine sand but a more intimate atmosphere. It's important to consider that, being a natural beach with an ecological focus, cleanliness is everyone's responsibility, and we are encouraged to keep it spotless.

The waters of Playa Mazunte are warm and crystal clear, with hues ranging from turquoise blue to emerald green, depending on the sunlight and depth. The water temperature is ideal for swimming year-round, allowing us to enjoy refreshing dips at any time. On the main beach, the waves can be moderate, making it attractive for those looking to practice surfing or bodyboarding, especially beginners. However, if we seek calmer, more serene waters, ideal for families with young children or for simply floating and relaxing, Playa Rinconcito is our best option. Its waters are gentler, protected by the surrounding rock formations, creating a perfect natural pool for a relaxing dip. We love the feeling of immersing ourselves in these waters, a true blessing of the Oaxacan Pacific.

Services and Facilities

Playa Mazunte offers us a range of services and facilities that, while not luxurious, are perfectly integrated with its ecological and bohemian philosophy. Here we won't find large hotel chains or all-inclusive resorts, but we will discover charming chiringuitos and beachfront restaurants where we can savor local delicacies with our feet in the sand. These establishments usually offer umbrellas and sun loungers for rent, allowing us to enjoy the shade and comfort while relaxing by the sea.

Regarding infrastructure, parking in Mazunte is usually informal, with spaces available on the streets near the beach or in small designated lots, often for a symbolic cost. Although there are no public showers on the beach as such, many of the nearby restaurants and accommodations have bathrooms/WCs that we can use. For our peace of mind, especially during high season, there are usually lifeguards monitoring the swimming areas, although we always recommend being cautious and respecting the instructions. Additionally, for adventurers, there are equipment rental points for surfing, snorkeling, and paddleboards, allowing us to explore the waters of Mazunte at our own pace. The restaurant offerings are varied, from simple food stalls to more elaborate options, all with a local and fresh touch.
