How to Get to Playa Sayulita

Getting to Playa Sayulita is relatively easy, especially if we fly into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), which is the closest. From there, we have several options to complete the approximately 40-60 minute journey, depending on traffic:

• Private taxi or Uber/DiDi service: This is the most comfortable and fastest option, though also the most expensive. Authorized taxis are located right outside the airport.
• Shared transportation or shuttle: Several companies offer direct transfers to Sayulita. It's a good option if we're traveling in a group or want to save a bit compared to a private taxi.
• Local bus: For the more adventurous and budget-conscious, taking the bus is an excellent alternative. We leave the airport, cross the pedestrian bridge to the opposite side of the highway, and wait for the 'Compostela' buses heading to Sayulita. They are economical and immerse us in local life. We just need to make sure the bus indicates 'Sayulita' on its windshield.
• Rental car: If we plan to explore the surrounding Nayarit beaches, renting a car at the airport gives us total freedom. Highway 200 is direct and in good condition. However, parking in Sayulita can be a challenge, especially during high season.

The Sand and Water

The sand at Playa Sayulita is a soft golden hue, fine and pleasant to the touch, ideal for walking barefoot or for children to build sandcastles. It stretches along the coast, offering us ample space to relax in the sun or play sports.

The Pacific waters in Sayulita are generally warm, with pleasant temperatures for most of the year. The clarity can vary; sometimes, especially after rains or with high visitor numbers, it may not be crystal clear, but it remains suitable for swimming. What is constant is its energy. Sayulita is known for its waves, which are perfect for beginner surfers, but also offer challenges for more experienced surfers. Towards the northern end of the beach, the waters are usually calmer, making them ideal for families and those seeking a more serene swim.

• Umbrellas and sunbeds: Most chiringuitos and some independent vendors rent umbrellas and sunbeds, perfect for protecting us from the sun and relaxing comfortably.
• Lifeguards: We have lifeguards on duty, which provides peace of mind, especially if traveling with children or planning to surf.
• Showers and Restrooms/WC: There are public showers and restrooms available, some for a fee, but very useful after a day at the beach.
• Equipment Rental: Numerous shops at the beachfront and in town offer rentals for surfboards, paddleboards, kayaks, and snorkeling gear. There are also surf schools for those who wish to learn.
• Parking: Although space is limited in the town center, there are paid parking areas and some streets where we can park, though it sometimes requires patience.
• Sports Area: The beach itself becomes a natural sports area for surfing, beach volleyball, and other activities.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Playa Sayulita and fully enjoy everything it offers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is sunny, temperatures are pleasant (between 20°C and 30°C), humidity is low, and the chance of rain is minimal. It's also whale watching season, an unmissable natural spectacle.

The rainy season, from June to October, brings warmer and more humid weather. Rains usually occur in the afternoon or evening and are intense but short-lived, leaving the air fresh and the landscape lush. Although there are fewer tourists, it's important to be aware of the possibility of tropical storms or hurricanes, especially in September and October. However, for those seeking lower prices and fewer crowds, this can be a good option, as long as we are prepared for the occasional downpour.
