How to Get to Playa El Novillero

Accessing Playa El Novillero is part of its charm as a remote destination, although it is not complicated if well planned. We always recommend a private or rental vehicle for greater freedom.

From Tepic, the capital of Nayarit

If we start from Tepic, the state capital, we will take federal highway 15 north towards Mazatlán. After a journey through varied landscapes, we will turn west towards Tecuala. The signage is usually clear. The trip from Tepic to Playa El Novillero can take between 2 and 3 hours. The road is mostly paved, although the last few kilometers may be secondary roads.

From Mazatlán, Sinaloa

For those coming from the north, such as Mazatlán, Sinaloa, the journey is equally accessible. We will take federal highway 15 south towards Tepic, looking for the turnoffs to Tecuala before reaching the Nayarit capital. This trip is shorter, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, ideal for a day trip.

From Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco

If our starting point is the south, from Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, the journey will be longer, about 4 to 5 hours. We will take highway 200 north, passing through destinations like Sayulita and San Blas, then connect with federal highway 15 and turn off towards Tecuala. This route allows us to travel much of the beautiful coast of Nayarit.

Public transportation

Although less direct, it is possible to reach Tecuala by bus from Tepic or Mazatlán, and from there, take a local taxi or combi to the beach. However, for true exploration, a private vehicle is the best option we advise.

The Sand and Water

The experience at Playa El Novillero is defined by its extraordinary natural characteristics, where the sand and water are the main protagonists. The sand is incredibly fine and soft, of a light golden hue, almost white in some sections, and feels like talc under our feet. This sand extends across a vast plain, creating an incredibly wide surface, perfect for long walks, beach games, or simply relaxing in the sun.

The most distinctive feature is its width. The distance between the vegetation and the sea can be several hundred meters at low tide, giving it a feeling of immensity rarely seen. This ensures we will always find a private space. As for the water, that of Playa El Novillero is mostly serene and welcoming. The waves are usually gentle and low, making it an ideal and safe place for swimming, especially for families with children. The entry into the sea is gradual, with a very gentle slope that extends for meters before the water gains depth, creating a safe zone for the little ones. The water temperature is warm for most of the year, inviting us for a refreshing dip. The color varies between blues and emerald greens, reflecting the sky. The combination of fine sand and calm water makes Playa El Novillero an idyllic setting for relaxation in Nayarit, Mexico.

Services and Facilities

Given the extensive and relatively pristine nature of Playa El Novillero, services and facilities are basic and concentrated at specific points, generally near the main access points. We value this simplicity that maintains the natural charm.

Food and drink options

The most common are the chiringuitos or rustic palapas, managed by local families. These offer fresh fish and seafood of the day, prepared in the Nayarit style, such as delicious zarandeado fish, camarones a la diabla, ceviches, and aguachiles, all accompanied by refreshing drinks. Prices are usually affordable and the culinary authenticity is unmatched.

Umbrellas and sunbeds

In these palapa areas, it is common to find umbrella and sunbed rentals. For a modest fee, or with a purchase, we can have shade and comfort. This is useful, as the beach is very open and natural shade is limited.
