How to Get to Playa Las Ánimas

Access to Playa Las Ánimas is an adventure in itself, which adds a special touch to the experience. There are no roads that lead directly to this beach, which guarantees its semi-virgin atmosphere and tranquility. We always recommend planning this journey in advance to enjoy it to the fullest.

From Puerto Vallarta

The most common way to get there is by taking a taxi or bus from Puerto Vallarta to Boca de Tomatlán. The urban bus ride from Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone is economical and direct, taking us along a picturesque coastal highway. Once in Boca de Tomatlán, a small fishing village, the true maritime adventure begins.

From Boca de Tomatlán

In Boca de Tomatlán, we will find water taxis (also known as 'pangas') that regularly depart for Playa Las Ánimas and other nearby beaches like Yelapa or Quimixto. The boat ride is relatively short, about 15-20 minutes, and offers spectacular views of the coast and the jungle-covered mountains. It is important to negotiate the price before boarding and confirm if the ticket is round-trip. We always prefer to buy the round-trip ticket for greater convenience and peace of mind. The boats usually operate from early morning until mid-afternoon, so it is crucial to pay attention to the return schedules so as not to miss the last boat.

Other Arrival Options

It is also possible to book private tours or catamaran excursions from Puerto Vallarta that include stops at Playa Las Ánimas. These options are usually more expensive, but offer the convenience of an all-inclusive package and can be ideal for large groups or those who prefer not to worry about logistics. We have tried both options and, while the tours are convenient, the experience of the water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán seems more authentic and adventurous to us.

The Sand and the Water

The experience of the sand and water at Playa Las Ánimas is, for us, one of its greatest attractions. The beach stretches for approximately 500 meters, offering ample space for recreation and relaxation, even on busier days.

Type of Sand

We find fine, golden sand, soft to the touch and perfect for walking barefoot or building sandcastles. Its light tone contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the ocean, creating a visually very attractive landscape. It is clean and well-maintained sand, which contributes to the feeling of being in a natural paradise.

The Waters

The waters of Playa Las Ánimas are, in a word, spectacular. They are crystal clear, with visibility that invites swimming and snorkeling. But what impresses us the most is their calmness. Protected by the geography of the bay and the surrounding mountains, the beach rarely experiences strong waves, making it an exceptionally safe place for swimmers of all ages, especially for the little ones. The water temperature is generally warm and pleasant year-round, perfect for a refreshing dip at any time of the day.

Services and Facilities

Despite its remote access, Playa Las Ánimas does not lack the essential services that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant stay. We greatly appreciate that, despite not being a developed beach, it offers what is necessary to enjoy without worries.

Chiringuitos and Restaurants

The beach is dotted with charming chiringuitos and palapa-style restaurants, which are, in essence, the heart of Las Ánimas' social life. Here we can enjoy excellent local cuisine, especially fresh seafood. From fish tacos to the famous 'pescado zarandeado', the culinary offering is delicious and authentic. Prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is always relaxed and welcoming. Furthermore, many of these establishments offer direct service to the sun loungers, allowing us to enjoy a cold drink or a dish without leaving the sand.

Umbrellas and Sun Loungers

At most restaurants and chiringuitos, we will find umbrellas and sun loungers available for rent. Sometimes, if we consume at the establishment, their use may be free. We always recommend securing a good spot in the shade, especially during the midday hours, to protect ourselves from the tropical sun.

Bathrooms/WC and Showers

The beach restaurants usually have Bathrooms/WC for their customers. Some also offer basic showers to rinse off the salt and sand before starting the return journey. While they are not luxury facilities, they serve their purpose and are very much appreciated after a day at the beach.
