Introduction
If there is a place on the coast of Jalisco that encapsulates the essence of Mexican beach life, mixing the tranquility of a fishing village with the excitement of adventure, that is undoubtedly Playa Boca de Tomatlán. Strategically located south of bustling Puerto Vallarta, 'La Boca' —as the locals affectionately call it— is not just a destination, but an experience in itself. We have visited it on numerous occasions and it always surprises us with its ability to remain authentic, despite its growing popularity.
This magical corner is much more than just a beach; it is a vibrant center of activity where the Horcones River meets the Pacific Ocean, creating an estuary of calm waters and lush landscape. It is the quintessential starting point for those seeking to explore the hidden gems of the southern coast of Bahía de Banderas, beaches accessible only by sea. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting us to enjoy the leisurely pace of local life, while the pangueros (boat drivers) patiently wait for their passengers and the aroma of fresh grilled fish fills the air. It is a place that invites us to disconnect, to observe, and to immerse ourselves in the local culture in a way that few destinations achieve.
How to Get to Playa Boca de Tomatlán
Getting to Playa Boca de Tomatlán is part of the adventure and, fortunately, there are several options that suit different budgets and preferences. We always recommend considering the journey as an opportunity to soak up the landscape and local life.
From Puerto Vallarta by Bus
The most economical and, for many, the most authentic way to get there is by bus. From downtown Puerto Vallarta, at the corner of Basilio Badillo and Insurgentes streets (in the Zona Romántica), you will find the Route 04 buses heading towards Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán. These buses are very frequent, inexpensive, and offer a scenic ride along the coast. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic, and the bus will drop you off right in the heart of the Boca de Tomatlán village, just steps from the beach and the pier.
By Taxi or Uber
If you prefer greater comfort and speed, a taxi or Uber service is an excellent option. The trip from Puerto Vallarta to Boca de Tomatlán usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes. It is a more expensive option than the bus, but ideal if you are traveling with a lot of luggage or simply want a direct, hassle-free transfer. We often choose this route when we are in a hurry or with large groups.
By Private Car
For those renting a car, Highway 200 south will take you directly to Boca de Tomatlán. The route is well signposted and offers spectacular views of the ocean and jungle. Once in the village, you will find paid parking options, although they are usually limited, especially in high season. It is important to arrive early to secure a good spot. Driving gives you the freedom to explore the surroundings at your own pace, which is a big plus for us.
By Water Taxi (from the south)
If you are already at one of the southern beaches accessible only by sea (such as Yelapa or Las Ánimas), you can take a water taxi back to Boca de Tomatlán. In fact, for many, Boca is the starting and ending point for these maritime excursions, solidifying its role as a true coastal transport hub.
The Sand and Water
Playa Boca de Tomatlán is a miniature gem. Its sand is predominantly fine, of a light golden hue, which gently mixes with some small shells and pebbles near the shore, creating an interesting texture underfoot. We always enjoy the feel of this sand, which is comfortable enough to lay out a towel and relax, but also firm enough for leisurely walks.
The type of ground is, as expected, mostly sand, which contributes to the transparency and warmth of its waters. The cove is well protected by the vegetation-covered hills and the mouth of the Horcones River, resulting in notably calm and shallow waters. This characteristic makes it an ideal place for swimming, especially for families with young children. We feel very safe letting the little ones play at the shore, as the waves are minimal and the current is almost non-existent within the main cove.
The transparency of the water varies slightly depending on the season and river activity, but in general, it is clear enough to see the sandy bottom and some small fish swimming near the shore. During the dry season (November to May), visibility is usually excellent, inviting a refreshing dip. It is a place where the water is not only pleasant for bathing but also for simply sitting on the shore and enjoying the serenity of the surroundings, listening to the gentle murmur of the waves and the occasional sound of boats setting sail.
Services and Facilities
Despite being a small village, Playa Boca de Tomatlán offers a surprising amount of services and facilities that make the visit comfortable and enjoyable. We always find everything we need to enjoy a full day of beach and exploration.
Restaurants and Chiringuitos
Undoubtedly, the highlight of Boca are its numerous Restaurants and Chiringuitos right on the beach and along the river. These establishments offer a delicious variety of fresh seafood and traditional Mexican dishes. We can sit at a table with our feet in the sand, enjoying cold beers and fish tacos while watching the activity at the pier. It is an experi
