How to Get to Qbajjar Bay Beach

Getting to Qbajjar Bay Beach is relatively easy, especially if we are already in Gozo. The cove is a short distance from Marsalforn, one of the island's most popular tourist centers, and from the charming village of Iż-Żebbuġ. We usually recommend renting a car to explore Gozo with complete freedom, and Qbajjar is no exception. From Victoria, the capital of Gozo, the drive takes just 10-15 minutes. Simply follow the signs to Marsalforn and, before arriving, take the turnoff to Qbajjar, which is well signposted.

By Car

Driving to the cove is the most comfortable option. There is free parking along the road that borders the bay, which facilitates access. It is informal parking, but there is usually space, except perhaps on the busiest days of midsummer. The roads in Gozo are generally good and distances are short, making any point on the island accessible in a short time from our Qbajjar Bay beach.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer public transport, there are bus lines connecting Victoria with Marsalforn and with Iż-Żebbuġ. From Marsalforn, Qbajjar Bay Beach is a walkable distance of about 15-20 minutes, a pleasant walk along the coast. From Iż-Żebbuġ, it is also possible to walk, although the route might be a bit longer. We always advise checking the Gozo Public Transport schedules, as they can vary by season.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Qbajjar Bay Beach, it is important to clarify that it is not an extensive sandy beach in the traditional sense. Its charm lies precisely in its wilder, rocky nature. The predominant ground type is rock, which forms natural platforms ideal for sunbathing or jumping into the water. In some areas, we find small accumulations of pebbles and coarse sand, which offer a gentler entry into the sea, but the overall experience is of a rocky cove.

The water at Qbajjar Bay is certainly one of its greatest attractions. It is incredibly crystal clear and of a turquoise blue that invites you in for a swim. The bay is sheltered, meaning its waters are usually very calm and shallow near the shore, making it perfect for safe swimming. The water clarity makes it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, allowing easy observation of the abundant marine life that inhabits the rocks and small underwater caves. We have spent hours exploring its seabed and are always surprised by the diversity we find.

Despite its size and relaxed atmosphere, Qbajjar Bay Beach has some essential services that enhance our visit. Do not expect massive tourist infrastructure, but just what is necessary to fully enjoy the day.

Parking

As mentioned, parking is straightforward. There is space to leave the car along the road surrounding the bay. It is a highly valued service, as it allows us to arrive comfortably with all our beach gear.

Chiringuitos and Restaurants

One of the best features of Qbajjar Bay is the presence of several restaurants and 'chiringuitos' right at the water's edge. Here we can enjoy an excellent meal, especially fresh fish and seafood, with unbeatable views. We always take the opportunity to sample the local cuisine after a good swim. Although they are not 'chiringuitos' in the traditional beach sense, they serve a similar function, offering drinks, snacks, and full meals.

Other Services

It is important to consider that, being a more natural cove, it does not have public showers, permanent lifeguards, or direct umbrella and sunbed rentals on the shore. We always recommend bringing our own towel, sunscreen, and snorkeling gear. The proximity of the restaurants may offer access to toilets/WCs if we are customers, which is an additional convenience.

Best Time to Visit

Qbajjar Bay Beach is a destination we can enjoy for much of the year, although we have our preferred times for each type of activity.
