How to Get to Playa de Skala Maries

Getting to Playa de Skala Maries is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite straightforward, especially if we choose to rent a vehicle, something we always advise for exploring the island of Thassos at our own pace. The island has an excellent network of roads that runs along its entire coast, making access to most of its points of interest easy.

From Limenas (Thassos Town)

If our starting point is Limenas, the capital and main port of Thassos, we must head south along the coastal road. The journey to Skala Maries is approximately 35-40 kilometers and will take us around 45-50 minutes by car, depending on traffic and any stops we make to admire the scenery. The route is scenic, winding through olive groves and offering us spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. We will pass through villages like Prinos and Skala Sotiros before reaching our destination.

From Potos or Limenaria

For those staying in the southern part of the island, such as Potos or Limenaria, access to Skala Maries is even quicker and more direct. From Potos, Skala Maries is about 10-12 kilometers to the north, a journey that takes about 15-20 minutes. From Limenaria, the distance is similar, perhaps a little less, about 7-8 kilometers, and the trip should not exceed 10-15 minutes. These are ideal options if we are looking to explore the various Thassos beaches of the southwest.

Public Transport and Other Means

Although a car is the most comfortable option, we can also reach Skala Maries using public transport. The KTEL Thassos bus network connects the island's main villages and beaches. There are regular routes running along the coastal road, and Skala Maries is a usual stop. However, schedules can be less frequent outside the high season, so we recommend checking them in advance. Another alternative is a taxi, although it is usually more expensive, especially for long distances. For the more adventurous, renting a motorcycle or a quad is also a popular and fun option for touring the island and reaching Playa de Skala Maries.

Walking on it, we feel a very pleasant softness under our feet, making it perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spreading out our towel and relaxing. Although in some areas, especially near the rocks or at the ends of the coves, we may find some mixture of small pebbles and shells, the general character of the sand is of a very appreciated fineness. It is sand that does not stick excessively to the skin and warms pleasantly under the Greek sun, inviting us to spend hours lying down.

The Water

But if the sand is attractive, the water is simply spectacular. The waters of Playa de Skala Maries are famous for their incredible clarity and their turquoise hue, which immediately invites us to dive in. The underwater visibility is excellent, making it an ideal place for snorkeling and observing marine life, especially in the nearby rocky areas. The sea here is generally very calm, protected from the winds by the configuration of the bay, creating a perfect natural pool.

Furthermore, the entry into the sea is gradual and shallow for several meters, an aspect we greatly appreciate when traveling with children or for those who do not feel very confident in deep water. This characteristic makes Playa de Skala Maries exceptionally safe and comfortable for the whole family. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is delightfully warm, allowing us to enjoy long swims without feeling cold. It is, without a doubt, one of the Thassos beaches that best combines beauty and comfort for bathing.
