How to Get to Playa de Koukounaries

Getting to Playa de Koukounaries is surprisingly simple, which contributes to its popularity and accessibility. Located in the southwestern part of the island of Skiathos, about 12 kilometers from the capital, Skiathos Town (also known as Chora), the transportation options are varied and efficient, allowing us to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

By Bus

The most common and economical way to get there is by using the excellent local bus service. Skiathos has a single bus line that runs along the island's south coast, from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries. The Koukounaries stop is the last one, number 26. Buses are frequent during the summer months, departing every 15-20 minutes, giving us great flexibility. Tickets can be purchased directly on the bus, and the journey offers panoramic views of the coast and other popular beaches along the way. It's an option we highly recommend for its comfort and low cost.

By Car or Motorbike

If we prefer more independence and to explore the island at our own pace, renting a car, scooter, or quad is an excellent alternative. The road to Koukounaries is well-paved and signposted. The journey from Skiathos Town usually takes about 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic. Upon arrival, we'll find several parking areas, either free or low-cost, although they can fill up quickly during high season. It's always advisable to arrive early if traveling by car to secure a good spot.

By Water Taxi

For a more picturesque and relaxing experience, we can opt for a water taxi from the port of Skiathos Town. These boats usually depart several times a day and drop us off directly on the beach shore. It's a fantastic way to see the coast from the sea and add a touch of adventure to our arrival. Although slightly more expensive than the bus, the comfort and views are well worth it, especially if traveling in a group or seeking a more exclusive experience.

The Water: A Crystal Mirror

The waters of Playa de Koukounaries are famous for their incredible transparency and their turquoise and emerald tones. They are so clear that we can easily see the seabed, even several meters deep. This clarity, along with their calmness, makes the beach a perfect place for swimming, diving, and snorkeling. The bay in which it is located is well-protected from the wind, meaning the waves are usually minimal, creating a natural pool ideal for everyone, from the most experienced swimmers to the youngest in the family.

Besides being crystal clear, the waters are shallow near the shore, making them very safe for children and those who are not comfortable in deep water. We can wade several meters without the water covering us completely, allowing the little ones to play with total freedom and safety. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is pleasantly warm, inviting us to spend hours submerged, cooling off from the sun and enjoying the serenity of the Aegean. The combination of golden sand and calm, transparent waters is what truly elevates Playa de Koukounaries to the category of a Mediterranean paradise.
