How to Get to Playa de Kiotari

Getting to Playa de Kiotari is relatively straightforward, although its location in the southeast of the island of Rhodes means it is not around the corner from the airport or the capital, which is part of its charm and contributes to its more relaxed atmosphere. We always recommend planning transportation in advance to ensure a hassle-free arrival.

From Rhodes International Airport (Diagoras, RHO)

Rhodes Airport is the main gateway to the island. From there to Kiotari is approximately 60-70 kilometers. The main options are:

• Car rental: This is, by far, the option we most recommend. Renting a car not only makes the transfer from the airport to Kiotari easier but also gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, discovering hidden coves and picturesque villages you wouldn't reach by public transport. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, following the east coast road which offers spectacular views.
• Taxi: There is a taxi rank right outside the airport terminal. It is a comfortable and direct option, though more expensive. Prices are usually fixed for main destinations, so it's a good idea to ask before getting in. The travel time is similar to that of a rental car.
• Bus: There is a public bus service (KTEL Rodas) connecting the airport with Rhodes Town. From Rhodes Town, you would need to take another bus bound for Kiotari or Gennadi. This option is the most economical, but also the most time-consuming and can be less comfortable if you are traveling with a lot of luggage. Buses to Kiotari are not as frequent as on other routes, so it is crucial to check the schedules in advance, especially outside the high season.

From Rhodes Town

If you are in Rhodes Town and want to visit Playa de Kiotari, you can also opt for the bus. The KTEL Rodas routes cover much of the island, and Kiotari is on the line heading south. The bus journey from Rhodes Town can take around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on stops. For us, although the bus is a viable option, the flexibility offered by your own vehicle to explore the surroundings of Kiotari is invaluable.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Kiotari, one of the first aspects that captivates us is the uniqueness of its ground and the clarity of its waters. Unlike other Rhodes beaches that may be fine golden sand, Kiotari presents a fascinating combination that gives it its own distinctive character.

Type of Sand and Ground

The ground at Kiotari is predominantly mixed, composed of an attractive mix of pebbles and coarse sand. This characteristic is not a drawback; on the contrary, it has its own advantages. The pebbles, varying in size from small stones to larger cobbles, mix with a coarser-grained sand, creating a unique texture underfoot. We recommend bringing water shoes or sandals, especially for children and for those who prefer a more comfortable entry into the sea, as the stones can be a bit bothersome when walking barefoot.

One of the benefits of this type of ground is that the water remains exceptionally clear. Without a large amount of fine sand being stirred up by the movement of waves or bathers, underwater visibility is optimal, making Kiotari an excellent place for snorkeling and simply admiring the seabed. Furthermore, the absence of fine sand means you won't get as much sand stuck to your body or belongings when you come out of the water, which is always a plus.
