Introduction

From the moment we set foot on Playa de Bali, on the fascinating island of Crete, we realize we've arrived at a special place. This picturesque resort, nestled in the Rethymno prefecture, is not a single beach, but a series of four idyllic coves, each with its own charm and personality. What unites them is the promise of crystal clear waters, soft sand and an atmosphere that invites both deep relaxation and family fun. It's a destination that has undoubtedly earned a place in the hearts of those seeking the essence of a perfect Mediterranean holiday.

The name 'Bali' may evoke images of Asia, but this Greek corner has its own beauty, authentic and deeply rooted in the Cretan landscape. Here, mountains meet the Aegean Sea, creating a dramatic backdrop for the golden sand beaches and turquoise waters. We find ourselves in an old fishing village that has managed to transform into a vibrant tourist centre, while maintaining its traditional character. It's the kind of place where days pass between refreshing swims, delicious meals by the sea and quiet walks along the harbour, while the Cretan sun caresses our skin.

How to get to Playa de Bali

Getting to Playa de Bali is relatively straightforward, given its strategic location between Crete's two main cities: Heraklion and Rethymno. For us travellers, this means excellent connections and multiple transport options. If we fly to Crete, we'll most likely land at Heraklion International Airport (HER), which is about 50 kilometres east of Bali. From there, we can take a taxi, which will take us directly in about 45 minutes, or rent a car, which we always recommend to explore the island at our own pace. The route is direct via the main E75 highway, which runs along the north coast.

If our base is in Rethymno, the distance is even shorter, about 30 kilometres to the west. A car journey will take us around 25-30 minutes. There are also intercity buses (KTEL) connecting Rethymno and Heraklion, stopping in Bali. The frequency is good during the high season, and it's an economical and comfortable option if we prefer not to drive. Once in the village of Bali, the beaches are well signposted and easily accessible on foot from most accommodations, or with short car trips if we're staying on the outskirts and want to explore all the coves.

The sand and water

When we talk about Playa de Bali, the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters are undoubtedly two of its greatest attractions. We find fine, golden sand, which is a delight underfoot and perfect for children who love building sandcastles. The coves are well protected from the prevailing winds, ensuring the sea is almost always calm, like a natural swimming pool. This feature is especially appreciated by families, as it allows even the youngest to enjoy a safe and pleasant swim.

The water is simply crystal clear. We can easily see the seabed, and its hue varies from a bright turquoise near the shore to a deeper blue as we go further out. The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours swimming and cooling off. The predominant ground type is sand, although in some rocky areas we can find small formations that are ideal for snorkelling, revealing an underwater world full of life. The combination of soft sand and calm waters makes these beaches a paradise for swimming and relaxation.

Services and facilities

Playa de Bali is a well-established tourist destination, and this is reflected in the excellent range of services and facilities it offers. We won't have to worry about anything, as comfort is guaranteed. In most of the main coves, we find ample areas with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, allowing us to enjoy the sun and sea breeze in total comfort. The presence of lifeguards during the high season gives us additional peace of mind, ensuring the safety of all bathers.

The gastronomic offer is varied and abundant, with numerous chiringuitos and restaurants right on the beach or just steps away. We can enjoy everything from a quick snack to a full meal, savouring authentic Cretan cuisine or international dishes. The facilities are completed with showers to wash off the salt and sand after swimming, as well as clean and accessible toilets/WCs. For those arriving by car, there are parking areas available, although they can fill up quickly in high season. Furthermore, for adventure lovers, there are options for equipment rental for water sports, adding an extra element of fun to our stay.

Best time to visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa de Bali depends largely on our personal preferences and what we're looking for in our holiday. However, we can say that Crete's Mediterranean climate ensures a long and pleasant tourist season. If we want to avoid large crowds and enjoy mild weather, late spring (May and early June) or early autumn (September and early October) are undoubtedly the ideal times. During these months, temperatures are warm but not stifling, the sea is perfect for swimming, and accommodation and flight prices are usually more attractive. The beaches are less crowded, allowing us a greater sense of peace and exclusivity.
