How to Get to Playa de Adele

Getting to Playa de Adele is relatively easy, as it is very well connected and a popular destination in the Rethymno region. Its proximity to the city of Rethymno (approximately 7-8 kilometers to the east) makes it very accessible, regardless of how we choose to travel.

From Heraklion or Chania Airport

If we arrive in Crete by plane, we will most likely land at Heraklion International Airport (HER) or Chania International Airport (CHQ). From both, the most comfortable option is to rent a car. The journey from Heraklion is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes (about 75 km), following the main E75 highway west towards Rethymno. From Chania, the trip is similar, around 1 hour and 10 minutes (about 70 km), heading east on the same E75. Driving in Crete is a delight, with changing landscapes and well-maintained roads. Once near Rethymno, the turnoffs to Adele are well signposted.

By Public Bus

For those who prefer public transport, there is an excellent network of intercity buses (KTEL) connecting the main cities and towns of Crete. From the Rethymno bus station, regular buses depart to Adele and other nearby coastal villages. The frequency is high, especially during the summer season, and the journey takes just 15-20 minutes. It's an economical and comfortable option, allowing us to relax and enjoy the scenery without worrying about parking.

By Car from Rethymno

If we are already staying in the city of Rethymno, getting to Playa de Adele by car takes about 10-15 minutes. Simply take the coastal road heading east, and in no time we will see the signs for Adele. The beach has parking areas, some free and others paid at the more organized establishments, which makes arrival very easy for those traveling by car.

By Taxi or Bicycle

A taxi from Rethymno is another quick and direct option, though more expensive. For the more adventurous or those who enjoy exercise, the bike lane along the coast is a fantastic way to reach the beach, allowing us to enjoy the sea breeze and panoramic views along the way.

The Sand and Water

One of the aspects that most captivated us about Playa de Adele was the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. The sand here is predominantly fine and golden, a delight for walking barefoot and for children to play building sandcastles. Although in some areas, especially near the shoreline or at the ends of the beach, it may mix with some small stones or pebbles, the overall feeling is one of very pleasant softness. This subtle mix gives it a natural and authentic character, without detracting one bit from its charm.

The waters of the Aegean Sea in this part of Crete are simply spectacular. Their crystal-clear and turquoise hue immediately invites us for a dip. The clarity is such that we can easily see the seabed, which is ideal for those who enjoy snorkeling or simply observing marine life. The entry into the sea is generally gentle and gradual, making it very safe for young children and those who are not expert swimmers. There are no abrupt drops or dangerous currents under normal conditions, which gives us great peace of mind.

The water temperature is another plus. During the summer months, from June to September, the water remains pleasantly warm, perfect for swimming, floating, and cooling off from the Cretan sun. Even in the spring and autumn months, many dare to swim, as the island's mild climate allows for enjoying the sea over a prolonged season. The cleanliness of the water, as attested by its Blue Flag, is impeccable, contributing to a completely pleasant and healthy bathing experience. It's the perfect place to feel the caress of the water and the warmth of the sun on our skin, in one of the best beaches Rethymno (Crete) has to offer.
