How to Get to Playa de Nagos

Getting to Playa de Nagos is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a fairly simple experience considering the location of the island of Chios. Like many of Greece's hidden gems, the best way to access Nagos is by car. From Chios City (Chora), the island's capital, the journey is approximately 15 to 20 kilometers, which translates to about 25-35 minutes of driving, depending on traffic and our skill navigating the local roads.

Route from Chios City

To get there, we will take the main road heading towards the north of the island, following the signs towards Vrontados and then towards Kardamyla. The roads in Chios are generally well-maintained, although they can be a bit winding in some sections, offering spectacular views of the island's rural and coastal landscape. As we approach the Nagos area, the road narrows a bit and gently descends towards the cove, gradually revealing the beauty of the beach.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: Without a doubt, the most recommended option. It gives us the freedom to explore not only Nagos but also the charming nearby villages and other Chios beaches at our own pace. There are several car rental agencies at the airport and in Chios City.
• Taxi: Another alternative, though more expensive. We can take a taxi from Chios City, but it is advisable to agree on the price in advance, especially if we plan for them to wait or pick us up at a specific time.
• Public Bus: While there is a public bus network in Chios, the schedules to more remote beaches like Nagos can be limited, especially outside the high season. It is always a good idea to check the updated schedules at the local bus station (KTEL Chios) if this is our preferred option. However, for greater flexibility and comfort, the car is unbeatable.

When we talk about the Playa de Nagos beach, one of the first things that comes to mind is the uniqueness of its shore and the impressive quality of its waters. Unlike the typical fine-sand Greece beaches one might imagine, Nagos surprises us with a surface of polished pebbles, giving it a distinctive character and particular beauty.

The Pebble Shore

The pebbles of Nagos vary in size, from small stones that feel smooth underfoot to slightly larger ones, but all of them have been smoothed by the constant ebb and flow of the sea. We recommend wearing water shoes or aqua socks, especially if we have sensitive feet, as it will greatly facilitate entering and exiting the water and make our walks along the shore more comfortable. The advantage of a pebble beach is that the water tends to be exceptionally clear, as there is no fine sand to stir up and cloud visibility.

The Crystal-Clear Waters

The waters of Nagos are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Their transparency is such that we can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several meters depth. The color ranges from a vibrant turquoise blue near the shore to a deeper blue as we go further out. This clarity, combined with the tranquility of the cove, makes it an idyllic place for swimming and snorkeling. We have spent hours exploring the small fish and marine life that hide among the rocks and pebbles on the bottom.

The Temperature and Tranquility

The water temperature at Nagos is very pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and refreshment from the Greek sun. Furthermore, being sheltered by the surrounding cliffs and vegetation, the Playa de Nagos usually has a very calm sea, with barely any waves.
