From the moment we set foot on its shore, we feel we have arrived at a special place, a refuge where time seems to slow down and nature embraces us with its serenity.

Playa de Horefto, located on the east coast of Pilio (Thessaly), is much more than an extensive stretch of sand and pebbles; it is a starting point to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of the region. Its name, which means 'dance', seems to invite us to move to the rhythm of the waves, to let ourselves be carried by the sea breeze, and to immerse ourselves in the authentic Greek essence. We, of course, have fallen in love with every corner of this jewel of the Aegean.

How to Get to Playa de Horefto

Getting to Playa de Horefto is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite accessible. The most common and recommended way is by car. From Volos, the capital of the Magnesia prefecture and the main gateway to Pilio, the journey takes about an hour, covering about 50 kilometers. The route takes us through picturesque mountain villages and lush landscapes, winding along well-maintained roads, although with some sharp curves that offer spectacular views. It's a journey we really enjoy, with each turn revealing a new postcard.

Access by Car

If we fly to Greece, the nearest airport is Nea Anchialos National Airport (VOL) in Volos, although many visitors choose to land at Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) or even Athens (ATH) and then rent a car to head to Pilio. From Thessaloniki, the drive is about 2.5 to 3 hours, while from Athens it can take between 3.5 and 4.5 hours, depending on traffic. Renting a car gives us the freedom to explore not only Horefto but also the charming villages and other nearby beaches of Pilio (Thessaly). Once in the village of Horefto, the beach is easily accessible, with clear signage and parking options, although in high season it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot near the shore.

Public Transport

Although there are intercity buses (KTEL) connecting Volos with the villages of Pilio, including Zagorá (the main village to which Horefto belongs), the frequency can be limited and they do not always go directly to the beach. From Zagorá, we might need a taxi or a walk to reach the coast. For this reason, to maximize our comfort and flexibility, we always advise using a private or rental vehicle to visit the Pilio (Thessaly) beach.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Horefto surprises us with a unique combination of sand and fine pebbles, giving it a distinctive character. As we approach the shore, we notice how the small pebbles polished by the sea gently mix with coarser sand, creating a pleasant texture underfoot. This composition keeps the water incredibly clear, as sedimentation is minimal. We love that feeling; it's different from the fine sand beaches we are used to, but no less pleasant.

Water Clarity and Temperature

The waters of the Aegean Sea at Horefto are of astonishing transparency, inviting us to immerse ourselves in their freshness. The color ranges from a bright turquoise near the shore to a deep blue offshore, reflecting the sky spectacularly. The water temperature is ideal during the summer months, warm and refreshing at the same time, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating. Even in the spring and autumn months, the bravest can enjoy an invigorating swim. The purity of these waters is, without a doubt, one of the great attractions of this Pilio (Thessaly) beach, and it's no wonder it is often awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a mark of environmental quality and services.

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Available for rent in several sections of the beach, perfect for protecting us from the sun and enjoying a comfortable rest.

• Showers and Toilets/WC: Essential for washing off the salt and sand after swimming.
• Lifeguard service: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard services, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if traveling with children.
• Parking: Parking areas are available, although, as mentioned, on days with high attendance it may be necessary to look a bit further away.
