How to Get to Playa de Sigri

Getting to Playa de Sigri is part of the adventure and allows us to appreciate the diverse landscape of Lesbos. The island is relatively large, and Sigri is located at its western end, which involves a journey that, although not excessively long, offers spectacular panoramic views.

From Mytilene, the capital

The most common starting point for most visitors is Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, where the airport and main port are located. From Mytilene, the distance to Sigri is approximately 90 to 100 kilometers, and the drive usually takes between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on traffic and the stops we make to admire the scenery. We always recommend renting a car to explore Lesbos, as it gives us the freedom to move at our own pace and discover hidden corners. The road is in good condition for most of the route, although some sections may be more winding as we approach the west coast.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: Undoubtedly the most convenient option. It gives us flexibility to visit the Petrified Forest, other villages, and nearby beaches. There are several car rental agencies at the airport and in Mytilene.
• Bus: There is a public bus service (KTEL Lesvos) connecting Mytilene with Sigri. However, schedules are usually limited, especially outside the high season, and the journey can be longer due to intermediate stops. We advise checking the schedules in advance if we choose this route.
• Taxi: A comfortable but more expensive option. It can be a good alternative if we are traveling in a group and sharing costs. The direct journey from Mytilene will take us to the heart of Sigri without complications.

Type of Sand and Ground

The beach is characterized by its fine, soft sand, of a pale golden hue that beautifully contrasts with the blue of the sea. Walking barefoot on it is a true pleasure, and children will enjoy building sandcastles without difficulty. The predominant ground type is sand, making it very comfortable for lying down and relaxing. In some areas, especially towards the ends of the beach or near the rocks, we might find a mix of small pebbles, but most of the swimming area is pure sand.

Water Quality and Characteristics

The waters of Playa de Sigri are notably crystal clear and calm. Sigri Bay is well protected, meaning the sea is usually calm, even on windy days. This calmness is one of the main reasons we consider it ideal for families with young children, as they can swim safely. The water clarity is exceptional, allowing us to easily see the seabed and making snorkeling a very rewarding activity. The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours swimming and cooling off.
