How to Get to Playa de Gourna

Getting to Playa de Gourna is part of the adventure and charm of visiting an island like Leros. The most common way to access the island is by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens. The journeys are usually overnight and can last between 8 and 10 hours, offering the chance to watch the sunrise over the Aegean Sea. There are also shorter connections from other Dodecanese islands, such as Rhodes, Kos, or Patmos, making it an ideal stop if you're doing some 'island hopping' in the region.

Once on Leros, the main port is Lakki, although some ferries also arrive at Agia Marina. From either of these points, Playa de Gourna is easily accessible. We recommend renting a car or a scooter at the port. This will give you the freedom to explore not only Gourna but also the island's charming villages and other beaches at your own pace. The road to Gourna is well signposted and the journey is short and picturesque, winding through vegetation and offering spectacular views of the Leros landscape. There is also a local bus service connecting the main villages, although its frequency may be limited outside the high season. For us, the independence of having your own vehicle is key to making the most of your stay.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Gourna welcomes us with a combination of sand and small pebbles that give it a unique character. We could say its sand type is 'mixed', with fine, dark sand predominating, which contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of its waters. This mix makes the beach comfortable for walking and sunbathing, although it's always a good idea to bring sandals or water shoes if you prefer more comfort when entering and exiting the sea, especially in areas with more pebbles.

But what truly captivates us about Gourna is its waters. They are incredibly crystal clear, with a transparency that allows you to easily see the seabed, even at some depth. Furthermore, they are notably calm and shallow near the shore, making them a paradise for families with young children and for those who enjoy a relaxing swim without worrying about currents. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is delightful and refreshing. It's the kind of beach where you can spend hours floating, watching the small fish, or simply letting yourself be carried away by the serenity of the surroundings. The experience of diving into these waters is, without a doubt, one of the greatest attractions of Playa de Gourna.

Despite its tranquil and relatively undeveloped atmosphere, Playa de Gourna offers the essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We highly value the presence of the chiringuitos (or rather, the charming traditional Greek tavernas) located right on the beach. These establishments are usually family-run businesses where you can taste authentic local cuisine, fresh fish of the day, and Leros specialties, all with unbeatable sea views. They are perfect for a light lunch, a Greek coffee, or a romantic dinner at sunset.

Furthermore, these same tavernas usually offer sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, allowing you to enjoy the sun and shade in total comfort. It's always a good idea to arrive early in the high season if you want to secure a good spot. As for parking, you'll find informal parking along the road that borders the beach. Don't expect an organized, paved parking lot, but rather spaces where you can leave your car or scooter without difficulty. The overall atmosphere is one of relaxation and simplicity, where services are integrated discreetly into the landscape, without altering the natural beauty of Playa de Gourna.

Best Time to Visit

For us, choosing the best time to visit Playa de Gourna and the island of Leros in general is key to enjoying an optimal experience. While the months of July and August are the most popular, we prefer the 'shoulder seasons' to avoid the crowds and enjoy equally splendid weather.

Spring (late May to June)

This is perhaps our favorite time. The weather is mild and sunny, perfect for swimming and sunbathing without the intense heat of midsummer. The island is in full bloom, offering green and vibrant landscapes, and the sea is already warm enough for a pleasant swim. Furthermore, accommodation and flight prices are usually more economical, and the tranquility of Playa de Gourna is accentuated, allowing you to enjoy the beach almost exclusively.
