How to Get to Playa de Zemata

Getting to Playa de Zemata is part of the adventure and allows us to appreciate the rural beauty of Lemnos. The island has its own international airport, Lemnos International Airport 'Hephaestus' (LXS), which receives flights from Athens and, in high season, from other European cities. Once at the airport, the most practical option for getting around the island and reaching Zemata is to rent a car. We always recommend this option, as the freedom to explore Lemnos at our own pace is invaluable.

From Myrina, the capital and main port of Lemnos, the journey to Zemata takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the route and pace. We will take the road that crosses the center of the island towards the east. The roads in Lemnos are generally good, although some can be narrow and winding, especially as we approach the coastal areas. It is important to pay attention to signs, although in some sections we might need the help of GPS to ensure we take the correct path to this beach in Lemnos.

As we approach the area, we will see signs, sometimes discreet, that will guide us to the beach. The final access is usually via a well-maintained dirt road that leads directly to an area where we can park. Parking at Zemata is informal, along the road or in a nearby clearing, but we always find enough space. It is part of the charm of less organized beaches: the feeling of discovery and exclusivity.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Zemata captivated us from the first moment with the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The sand here is a soft golden color with a fine texture, a true pleasure to walk on barefoot. It stretches for about 350 meters, offering ample space to relax and enjoy the sun without feeling overwhelmed by the crowd. It is the kind of sand that invites building sandcastles, or simply lying down and feeling its warmth under the Greek sun.

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. The waters of Zemata are a crystal-clear turquoise hue, so transparent that we can see the seabed with perfect clarity. The entry into the sea is very gentle and gradual, making it an excellent option for everyone, especially families with young children. The water temperature in the summer months is delightful, inviting us to spend hours swimming, floating, and cooling off from the Mediterranean heat.

The seabed is predominantly sandy, which contributes to the transparency and feeling of comfort while bathing. At the ends of the beach, we can find some rocky formations that are ideal for snorkeling, exploring the local marine life in the clear waters. The combination of fine sand and calm, clear waters makes Zemata one of the most pleasant beaches in Greece for enjoying a relaxing and safe swim.

Services and Facilities

One of the characteristics that define Playa de Zemata is its semi-organized nature, which contributes to its charm and tranquility. Do not expect to find massive tourist infrastructure here, but rather the essentials for a relaxed beach day. We highly value this authenticity, which allows us to enjoy the natural beauty without distractions.

Among the services we can find, we highlight:

• Parking: As mentioned, parking is informal but accessible. There is enough space along the access road and in a small clearing adjacent to the beach, making it easy to arrive by vehicle.
• Sunbeds and umbrellas: During the peak summer season (July and August), it is common to find a limited number of sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. This allows us to enjoy shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment.
• Chiringuitos: Often, there is a small seasonal canteen or 'chiringuito' operating on the beach. This offers us refreshing drinks, coffees, ice creams, and some light snacks, perfect for a midday bite. Do not expect a full restaurant, but a simple and cozy stall.
