How to Get to Playa de Keros (Surf/Kite)

Getting to Playa de Keros (Surf/Kite) is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's a fairly straightforward process. The island of Lemnos has its own international airport, Lemnos International Airport 'Hephaestus' (LXS), which receives direct flights from Athens and, during the high season, also from other European cities. Our recommendation is to look for flights with Aegean Airlines or Olympic Air from Athens; the journey is short and usually very comfortable.

Once we land in Lemnos, the most practical and flexible way to get to Playa de Keros (Surf/Kite) and explore the island is by renting a car. There are several car rental agencies available at the airport and in Myrina, the capital. The beach is located on the eastern part of the island, about 35-40 kilometers from Myrina, which translates to a car journey of approximately 40-50 minutes. The route is picturesque, winding through rural landscapes and small villages, offering us a first impression of Lemnos's natural beauty.

By Rental Car

We rented a car, and the route to Keros is quite direct. We can follow the signs to Kalliopi or Kontopouli and then towards the east coast. The roads in Lemnos are generally good, although some can be narrow and winding, especially as we approach the beach. The trip is an opportunity to enjoy the island's pristine landscape, with wheat fields, vineyards, and views of the Aegean Sea. At Keros beach itself, we'll find ample parking areas, making arriving with our own vehicle very convenient. It's essential to remember that having a car gives us the freedom to explore the surroundings at our own pace, something we highly value on any trip.

Taxi or Public Transport

Although renting a car is our preferred option, it's also possible to take a taxi from the airport or Myrina to Playa de Keros (Surf/Kite). Taxis are available and prices are reasonable for the distance. However, once at the beach, mobility is considerably reduced if we don't have our own vehicle, as public transport options are limited and don't go directly to the sand. For longer stays or if we plan to move around a lot, the rental car remains the best alternative to make the most of our vacation at this wonderful Lemnos beach.

The Sand and the Water

When we think of Playa de Keros (Surf/Kite), one of the first images that comes to mind is its sand. We are faced with a long stretch of fine, golden sand that extends for approximately 1.5 kilometers along the coast. It's one of those beaches where we can walk barefoot for hours, feeling the softness under our feet, and where children can play and build endless sandcastles. The width of the beach ensures that, even on the busiest days, we'll always find a quiet corner for ourselves.

The type of ground is predominantly sand, making it a very comfortable and safe place. There are no rocks in sight, no pebbles to bother us, just the soft, warm sand of the Aegean. This characteristic is especially important for water sports, as it provides a safe take-off and landing surface for kites and sails, and reduces the risk of injury. The feeling of having so much open space, both sand and sea, is truly liberating and allows us to enjoy nature in its purest state.

As for the water, the waters of Playa de Keros (Surf/Kite) are simply spectacular: crystal clear, a turquoise blue that invites you to swim, and, most importantly, incredibly shallow. We can venture many meters into the sea and the water will barely cover our waist, making it an ideal place to learn kitesurfing and windsurfing, as well as for children to splash around safely.
