How to Get to Playa de Xerokampos

Getting to Playa de Xerokampos is, in itself, part of the adventure and charm of this destination. Given its remote location at the southeastern tip of the island, don't expect to find major highways or direct access. The most common way is to fly into Heraklion Airport (HER) or Sitia Airport (JSH), the latter being much smaller but closer. From Heraklion, the drive can take between 2.5 and 3 hours, while from Sitia it's reduced to about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

By Rental Car

We always recommend renting a car to explore Crete, and for Xerokampos it's almost a necessity. The road leading here is winding and, in some sections, can be narrow, but the accompanying landscape is simply spectacular. You'll drive through olive groves, small villages, and panoramic sea views that will take your breath away. It's crucial to drive with caution, especially on sharp curves and steep descents. Once you arrive in the Xerokampos area, you'll find several coves and informal parking spots, near the tavernas or directly on the sand in some stretches.

Public Transport

While there is a limited KTEL bus service in Crete, getting to Playa de Xerokampos by public transport is complicated and impractical. There is no direct line that reaches the beaches. You could take a bus to Sitia or Ierapetra and from there try a taxi, but the cost would be high and flexibility non-existent. For us, the freedom of a rental car is essential to fully enjoy this corner of Lasithi.

The Sand and Water

Don't expect large tourist complexes or luxury infrastructure; here, beauty lies in simplicity and nature.

Chiringuitos and Tavernas

Near the main coves, such as Mazida Ammos, you'll find some chiringuitos and small family-run tavernas. These establishments usually offer refreshing drinks, coffees, ice creams, and, of course, delicious Cretan food. It's the perfect place to recharge with a plate of fresh fish or a Greek salad while enjoying the sea views. We always appreciate these small local gems that preserve the authentic flavor of the island.

Umbrellas and Sunbeds

Some of these chiringuitos and tavernas offer umbrella and sunbed rentals for a modest price. It's a comfortable option if you prefer not to carry your own equipment. However, you'll find wide beach areas where you can spread your towel freely and enjoy the natural shade offered by some tamarisk trees or rock formations, if you're lucky enough to find a spot.

Parking

Parking at Playa de Xerokampos is generally informal and free. There are designated areas near the tavernas or simply spaces along the road that borders the coves where you can leave your car. Although it's not a supervised parking lot, the area is quiet and safe. We recommend arriving early in high season to secure a good spot, especially if you visit in August.
