How to Get to Makrigialos Beach

Getting to Makrigialos Beach is relatively straightforward, although Crete is a large island and distances can be considerable depending on where we land. The most common way to arrive is by flying into one of the island's two main airports: Heraklion International Airport (HER) or Sitia Airport (JSH). While Heraklion is larger and receives more international flights, Sitia is considerably closer to Makrigialos, reducing road travel time.

From Heraklion airport, the journey to Makrigialos is approximately 120-130 kilometers, which translates to about two hours by car. We always recommend renting a car in Crete, as it gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace and discover hidden coves and charming villages not accessible by public transport. The roads are generally in good condition, although some can be winding, offering spectacular landscapes at every turn. There are several reputable car rental companies at both airports, and booking in advance usually guarantees better prices and availability, especially in high season.

If we choose Sitia airport, the trip is much shorter, just 35-40 kilometers, which will take us about 45 minutes by car. This is undoubtedly the most comfortable option if flight availability allows. In addition to a rental car, there is the possibility of using public transport. The KTEL bus network in Crete is quite efficient and connects the main cities and towns. From Heraklion, we can take a bus to Ierapetra and then another to Makrigialos. However, schedules can be less frequent, and the journey longer, so for maximum flexibility, the car remains our main recommendation. Once in Makrigialos, the beach is easily accessible on foot from most accommodations in the village, as it stretches along the seafront of this charming coastal town. Parking is usually straightforward in the vicinity, especially if we arrive early or outside peak times.

The Sand and Water

A fundamental characteristic that distinguishes it and is a major attraction, especially for families, is its shallowness. The sea at Makrigialos is extraordinarily shallow for many meters from the shore, creating a kind of safe and calm 'natural pool'. Children can play and splash in complete safety, and adults can relax knowing the little ones are in a controlled environment. This condition of shallow waters, combined with the natural protection of the bay, means the waves are generally very gentle or non-existent, providing a serene and peaceful atmosphere, very different from some of the more wind-exposed Greece beaches.
