We venture to the eastern tip of Crete, one of the most fascinating islands in Greece, to discover a true treasure: Playa de Itanos. Far from the hustle and bustle of the busier tourist centers, this Lasithi (Crete) beach offers us a unique experience, combining pristine natural beauty with a deep historical connection. It is a place where time seems to stand still, allowing us to enjoy the tranquility we so desire.

Playa de Itanos is not just a stretch of sand and sea; it is a complex of small coves with fine sand and turquoise waters, framed by the impressive ruins of the ancient city of Itanos. Here, we can swim among vestiges of a glorious past, feeling the sea breeze that has caressed these shores for millennia. It is the perfect destination for those seeking to escape, immerse themselves in history, and enjoy nature in its purest state on the Lasithi (Crete) beaches.

How to Get to Playa de Itanos

Getting to Playa de Itanos is part of the adventure. Located about 26 kilometers east of Sitia and very close to the famous palm forest of Vai, access is relatively easy by car. From Sitia, we will take the coastal road heading east, passing through Palekastro. The signage towards Vai is clear, and before reaching Vai, we will find a well-marked turnoff towards the ruins of Itanos and its beach.

Route by Car

• From Sitia: Approximately 40 minutes by car. The road is paved and in good condition. As we approach, we will see a sign indicating 'Itanos' and 'Ancient Itanos'.
• From Palekastro: Much closer, about 10-15 minutes. It is an ideal option for staying and making day trips.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Itanos surprises us with its fine, golden sand, soft to the touch and perfect for lying down and relaxing. It is not a long beach, but rather a succession of three main coves, each with its own charm. The sand mixes in some areas with small stones polished by the sea, adding a natural and wild touch to the landscape.

But what truly captivates us are its crystal-clear waters. With shades ranging from turquoise to deep blue, they are incredibly transparent, allowing us to easily see the seabed. The waters are calm, protected by the surrounding rock formations, making them ideal for swimming and perfect for children. The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours immersed in its coolness. The combination of fine sand and crystal-clear waters creates an idyllic atmosphere, worthy of the best Greece beaches.

Services and Facilities

If we are looking for a beach with all the comforts of a resort, Playa de Itanos might not be our first choice. However, its charm lies precisely in its more wild and less developed character. The services are basic, but sufficient to enjoy a splendid day.

Available Services:

• Parking: There is an informal, unpaved parking area, free and relatively spacious, right next to the ruins and near the coves.
• Chiringuitos: During the high season (especially July and August), it is common to find a small chiringuito or a van selling cold drinks, snacks, and perhaps some simple food. Let's not expect a formal restaurant, but something more rustic and local.
• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: In the summer months, there is often a rental service for sunbeds and umbrellas on the main cove, managed by a local business. This is very useful, as the beach does not have much natural shade.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa de Itanos can make a difference in our experience. Like many Greece beaches, the Mediterranean climate guarantees many sunny days, but crowds and temperatures vary throughout the year.

High Season (July and August)

• Advantages: Warm, sunny weather, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The sea is at its most pleasant temperature. Basic services (chiringuito, umbrella rental) are usually operational.
• Disadvantages: This is the time of highest tourist influx, both local and international. The beach can be more crowded, although Itanos will always be less crowded than other Lasithi (Crete) beaches. Accommodation and flight prices may be higher.

Mid-Season (May, June, September, October)

• Advantages: In our opinion, this is the best time to visit. The weather is equally pleasant, with warm but not excessively high temperatures. The sea is still perfect for swimming, especially in September. The number of people is significantly lower, allowing us to enjoy the tranquility and relaxed atmosphere of Playa de Itanos to the fullest. It is ideal for exploring the ruins and hiking.
• Disadvantages: Some seasonal services might not yet be operational in May or may have already closed in
