How to Get to Playa de Elounda

The main gateway to Crete for most international travelers is Heraklion International Airport 'Nikos Kazantzakis' (HER), located approximately 65-70 kilometers west of Elounda. From there, we have several options to reach our paradisiacal destination.

From Heraklion Airport

The most comfortable and direct option is to rent a car directly at the airport. This will provide us with the freedom to explore not only Playa de Elounda, but also the fascinating surroundings of Lasithi (Crete) at our own pace. The road connecting Heraklion to Elounda is the E75, a well-maintained highway offering panoramic views of the coast and the island's interior. The drive usually takes about an hour, depending on traffic.

Another popular alternative is to take a taxi from the airport. Although it can be more expensive, it's an excellent option if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or prefer the comfort of a direct transfer. Prices are usually fixed or negotiable, so it's advisable to ask before starting the trip. For those on a tighter budget, public transport is a viable option. We can take a bus from Heraklion Airport to the Heraklion bus station, and from there, take another bus from the KTEL Creta company that will take us to Agios Nikolaos (the capital of Lasithi) and then to Elounda. The buses are modern and comfortable, although the journey will be longer and involve transfers.
