How to Get to Playa de Polis

Getting to Playa de Polis is part of the adventure and charm of Ithaca. Located in the northern part of the island, it is accessible mainly by car or motorcycle. From Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes, winding along roads that offer spectacular views of the mountainous landscape and the Ionian Sea. The road is well signposted and the route is relatively easy, although some sections can be narrow and winding, adding a touch of excitement to the journey.

As we approach the beach, we will notice the presence of a small fishing harbor, which is one of the distinctive features of Polis. Here, we will normally find parking options, although in high season it can be a bit busier. We always recommend arriving early to secure a good spot and enjoy the morning tranquility of the beach before more visitors arrive. The proximity of the parking to the sand makes access quite comfortable, even for those traveling with children or with a bit more luggage.

In addition to private transport, there is the option of using local taxis from Vathy or nearby villages, although this can be a more expensive alternative. For the more adventurous, public transport in Ithaca is limited, but some buses connect Vathy with Stavros, from where Playa de Polis is within walking distance or a short taxi ride. However, the flexibility offered by a car seems to us the best option for exploring not only Polis, but also the charming surroundings of this area of Ithaca.

The Sand and Water

One of the first things that surprises us when stepping onto Playa de Polis is its type of ground. Here we will not find the fine, golden sand that characterizes other Greece beaches; in Polis, pebbles predominate, small stones polished by the sea over the centuries. These pebbles, which vary in shades from white to gray and ochre, give the beach a unique texture and rustic charm. While they may be a little less comfortable for walking barefoot than fine sand, their presence contributes to the astonishing clarity of the water, as no sediment is stirred up.

We can observe varied marine life: small colorful fish, starfish, and, if we are lucky, even an eel or octopus hidden among the rocks. The edges of the bay, where the pebbles mix with rock formations, are especially interesting to explore.
