We venture into the heart of Crete to discover one of its most accessible and beloved gems: Playa de Karteros. Located just a few kilometers east of the vibrant city of Heraklion, this beach presents itself as an ideal destination for those seeking to combine the comfort of a well-equipped area with the natural beauty of the Aegean Sea. It is one of those Heraklion (Crete) beaches that has it all, from soft sand to crystal-clear waters and top-level tourist infrastructure.

Playa de Karteros is notable for its length. At approximately three kilometers long, it offers plenty of space for everyone, even during the busiest months. Its proximity to Heraklion Airport makes it an incredibly practical option for travelers who have just arrived or are about to depart, allowing us to maximize every minute of our Cretan vacation. We find ourselves on a golden sandy shore that invites rest, play, and exploration of its coastline. It is, without a doubt, one of the most convenient Greece beaches.

How to Get to Playa de Karteros

Getting to Playa de Karteros is extremely simple, given its strategic location. We, as visitors, have several options at our disposal, all of them comfortable and efficient.

From Heraklion City

If we are in the center of Heraklion, we can choose:

• Bus: Bus line number 1 regularly connects the center of Heraklion with the Karteros and Amnissos area. It is an economical and reliable option, and the buses are usually well-maintained.
• Taxi: A taxi from the center of Heraklion will take us to Karteros in just 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic. It is a faster and more comfortable alternative, especially if we are traveling with luggage or in a group.
• Rental Car: Renting a car offers us maximum flexibility to explore not only the beach but also the surrounding area. The route is direct and well-signposted, and the journey is short, about 10 minutes.

From Heraklion Airport (HER)

Playa de Karteros is literally a stone's throw from Heraklion's Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport. This is a huge advantage for us.

• Taxi: A short 5-minute taxi ride will drop us off right at the beach. It is the fastest and most hassle-free option.
• On Foot: For the more adventurous or those with little luggage, it is possible to walk, although there is no continuous sidewalk along the entire route and we recommend caution.
• Rental Car: If we have rented a car at the airport, access is immediate and very easy to find.

Parking

For those of us who choose to drive, Playa de Karteros has several Parking areas along its length, some of them free and others managed by the local beach bars and restaurants, which usually offer them to their customers. We have never had major problems finding a spot, even in high season, thanks to the length of the beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the most attractive features of Playa de Karteros is, without a doubt, its sand and the quality of its waters. We are always impressed by the combination of both elements.

Type of Sand

The beach is distinguished by its fine and golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch. It is the kind of sand that invites us to walk barefoot for kilometers, feel it under our feet, and enjoy the warmth of the sun. Perfect for building sandcastles with children or simply relaxing on a towel. Its golden hue contrasts wonderfully with the blue of the sea, creating a very pleasant landscape to the eye.

Water Quality

The waters of Playa de Karteros are, in general, calm, clear, and shallow, especially near the shore. This makes it an exceptionally safe place for swimming, even for the little ones. Water cleanliness is a strong point, and it is not uncommon for this Heraklion (Crete) beach to be awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies excellence in water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. We feel safe and comfortable immersing ourselves in its refreshing waters, ideal for a dip or a long swim.
