How to Get to Playa de Vagia

Getting to Playa de Vagia is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a simple experience that brings us closer to Greek island life. To begin, the most common way to reach the island of Aegina is by taking a ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens. Ferries are frequent and the journey usually takes between 40 minutes (with the 'Flying Dolphin' or 'Flying Cat') and 1 hour and 15 minutes (with the conventional ferry), offering spectacular views of the Saronic Gulf as we approach the island.

Once we disembark at the main port of Aegina, in the island's capital, we have several options to get to Playa de Vagia, which is located on the northeast coast. We recommend:

• Local bus: There is a bus line connecting Aegina town with Agia Marina, and from there you can take another bus or a taxi to Vagia. It is the most economical option, although schedules may be less frequent, especially outside the high season. It is an authentic way to get around and soak up the local atmosphere.
• Taxi: From the port of Aegina, a taxi will take us directly to the beach in about 15-20 minutes. It is a comfortable and relatively fast option, ideal if we are traveling with luggage or in a group. Prices are usually fixed or negotiable, so it's always a good idea to ask before starting the journey.
• Vehicle rental: For those who, like us, enjoy the freedom to explore at their own pace, renting a car or a scooter in Aegina town is the best alternative. The journey to Vagia is picturesque, winding along coastal roads with views of the sea and pistachio fields. It allows us to stop wherever we want, discover secret coves, and visit other nearby points of interest with total flexibility. The road is well signposted and easy to follow, making the driving experience very pleasant.

The Sand and Water

One of the first things that captivated us upon arriving at Playa de Vagia was the quality of its sand and the impressive clarity of its waters. The beach is covered with fine golden sand, soft to the touch and perfect for walking barefoot. It is not overly sticky sand, which is always appreciated, and its color contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. It is ideal for spreading out a towel and enjoying a day in the sun, or for children to build their sandcastles without difficulty.

But undoubtedly, the main attraction of Vagia is its crystal-clear waters. They are so transparent that we can see the seabed with total clarity, even at some depth. The cove is well protected, which means the sea is usually calm, with barely any waves. This makes it an exceptionally safe place for swimming, especially for families with young children. The waters are shallow near the shore, allowing children to play safely while adults enjoy a relaxing swim.

The water temperature in the summer months is simply perfect: warm and refreshing at the same time, inviting long swims and forgetting about everything. At the ends of the beach, where the sand meets some rock formations, snorkeling becomes a fascinating activity. We can observe small fish and local marine life, adding a touch of adventure to the overall tranquility. The combination of fine sand and pristine waters makes Playa de Vagia a truly special place for sea and relaxation lovers.

Services and Facilities

Despite its tranquil and somewhat more secluded atmosphere compared to other busier beaches in Aegina, Playa de Vagia does not lack the essential services that make our stay comfortable and pleasant. We were pleasantly surprised to find that, while maintaining its natural essence, it offers what is necessary to enjoy a full day at the beach without worries.

Among the services we have found and consider very useful are:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Along part of the beach, there are areas where we can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds. This is ideal for those who prefer not to carry their own equipment and want to secure a spot in the shade to protect themselves from the Greek sun. Prices are usually reasonable and the service is friendly.
• Chiringuitos/Tavernas: Right on the beach or just a few steps away, we found one or two chiringuitos or small tavernas. These establishments are perfect for having a cold drink, a Greek coffee, or even enjoying a light meal with sea views. We enjoyed some delicious 'mezedes' (Greek appetizers) and fresh fish, which tasted heavenly after a good swim. The atmosphere is relaxed
