Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Messonghi, on the charming island of Corfu, Greece, we knew we had found something special. Located on the east coast of the island, about 22 kilometers south of the capital, Corfu Town, this beach presents itself as a serene refuge that is also full of life. It's the kind of place where days stretch lazily under the sun, the sound of the waves is a constant background melody, and worry seems to fade with each sea breeze. The beach is a favorite destination for families, couples, and anyone looking for a perfect combination of relaxation and activity in a beautiful natural setting.
Playa de Messonghi is not just a stretch of coastline; it's a complete experience. Its waters, of a crystal-clear blue that invites you to swim, are typically calm and shallow, making it an exceptionally safe place for the little ones. The surrounding landscape, with lush vegetation and the silhouettes of mountains in the background, adds a picturesque touch that is pure visual delight. Furthermore, the proximity to the village of Messonghi means we are never far from a good meal, a refreshing drink, or any need that may arise during our vacation. It is, without a doubt, one of the Corfu beaches we most recommend, a true emblem of what Greece beaches can offer.
How to Get to Playa de Messonghi
Getting to Playa de Messonghi is quite straightforward, regardless of how we choose to get around the island of Corfu. We always value comfort and flexibility, so we have explored several options that suit different types of travelers.
By Rental Car
For us, renting a car is the most recommended way to explore Corfu and, of course, to get to Messonghi. From Corfu International Airport (CFU) or from Corfu Town, the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic. The route is simple and well signposted. Simply follow the main road heading south on the island. The advantage of having a car is the freedom to stop at impromptu viewpoints, explore hidden coves, or visit nearby villages at our own pace. Also, in Messonghi and its surroundings, we found several parking areas, some free and some paid, which makes access to the beach easy.
By Public Bus
If we prefer a more economical option and don't mind depending on schedules, the public bus is an excellent alternative. The Green Buses network of Corfu is quite efficient and connects the capital with the main tourist destinations on the island. There are regular lines from Corfu Town to Messonghi. The bus ride is comfortable and offers the chance to enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving. Once in Messonghi, the bus stop is usually a short walk from the beach, which is very convenient.
By Taxi or Private Transfer
For a stress-free arrival, especially if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group, a taxi or private transfer is a fantastic option. We can book it in advance or easily find taxis at the airport and in Corfu Town. Although it is the most expensive option, the comfort of being taken directly to our accommodation or to the beach without delays is a big plus, especially after a long flight. It's an investment that is sometimes worth it for the peace of mind it provides.
The Sand and Water
When we talk about Playa de Messonghi, the description of its sand and waters is essential to understand its charm and why it is so appreciated, especially by families. We, like many visitors, are drawn to its dual nature and welcoming atmosphere.
The Beach Composition
Playa de Messonghi is characterized by having a mixed composition. It is not a fine, golden sand beach in the Caribbean style, but rather a combination of sand and small pebbles or shingle. This mix gives it a particular texture that, for us, is part of its charm. The area closest to the shore usually has a higher proportion of small pebbles, which become finer as we move further onto the beach, where the sand becomes more prominent. This characteristic has its advantages: the pebbles prevent the sand from sticking too much to the skin and towels, and the water tends to be clearer as there are fewer particles in suspension. Although for some it may seem less comfortable than a pure sand beach, the truth is that with good flip-flops or water shoes, the experience is totally pleasant.
The Crystal-Clear and Calm Waters
But if there's something that truly captivates us about Playa de Messonghi, it's its waters. They are consistently crystal-clear, allowing us to easily see the seabed and inviting us to dive in without hesitation. The color of the sea varies from a light turquoise near the shore to a deeper blue as we move away, creating a visually very attractive landscape. The most notable feature, however, is its tranquility. Messonghi Bay is well protected from strong winds, resulting in an almost always calm sea, with minimal waves. This characteristic is crucial, especially for families with young children, as it allows them to play and swim safely without worrying about currents or intense waves. The water depth is also gradual, which means we can walk quite far from the shore before the water covers us, adding an extra layer of safety and fun for the little ones.
A Paradise for Swimming and Snorkeling
The combination of clear and calm waters makes Messonghi an ideal place for swimming and other water activities. We love simply
