Introduction
Today we delve into the heart of northeastern Corfu to discover a true treasure: Playa de Kassiopi. This charming corner of Greek beaches is much more than just a place to sunbathe; it's an experience that combines the natural beauty of its pebble coves with the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional fishing village. From the moment we set foot in Kassiopi, we are enveloped by a sense of authenticity and serenity that invites us to completely disconnect.
Playa de Kassiopi is not a single vast stretch of sand, but a succession of small, charming coves, each with its own character and charm. The most well-known ones, such as Kalamionas, Pipitos, and Bataria, are distinguished by their incredibly transparent waters and smooth white pebbles, polished by the Aegean. It's the kind of place where time seems to stand still, and every dip becomes an unforgettable memory of the essence of Corfu beaches.
How to Get to Playa de Kassiopi
Getting to Playa de Kassiopi is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite accessible. Kassiopi is located in the far northeast of the island of Corfu, about 35 kilometers from the capital, Corfu Town (Kerkyra). We always recommend several options to suit each traveler's preferences.
By Rental Car
For us, the most comfortable and flexible option is renting a car. It allows us to explore the island at our own pace and discover hidden corners. From Corfu Town, the journey to Kassiopi takes approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic and our speed. The route is scenic, winding along the northeast coast and offering spectacular views of the Ionian Sea and the Albanian coast in the distance. There are parking lots, both public and private, near the village of Kassiopi, although they can fill up quickly in high season. It's important to arrive early to secure a good spot.
By Public Bus
Corfu has a public bus system (KTEL) that connects Corfu Town with the main villages and beaches of the island. There are regular lines that go to Kassiopi. It's an economical option and allows us to relax and enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving. Schedules are usually reliable, but it's always advisable to check them in advance, especially for the return trip. The bus stop in Kassiopi is conveniently located near the village center, a short walk from the main coves.
By Taxi or Private Transfer
If we're looking for a more direct and hassle-free option, a taxi or private transfer is an excellent alternative. Although more expensive, it guarantees us a comfortable and quick trip from the airport or any point on the island directly to our accommodation in Kassiopi. It's ideal if we're traveling with a lot of luggage or if we simply prefer the comfort of being picked up and dropped off at the door.
By Boat
For adventurers and sea lovers, arriving in Kassiopi by boat is an unforgettable experience. Kassiopi's harbor is a vibrant natural port, full of life. We can rent a small boat (many don't require a license) from Corfu Town or from other nearby towns like Gouvia or Dassia, and sail along the stunning coast. There are also organized boat tours that stop in Kassiopi, allowing us to combine beach enjoyment with a pleasant sea voyage.
The Sand and Water
The first thing that surprises us about Playa de Kassiopi is the uniqueness of its 'sand'. Here we won't find the typical stretches of fine sand we might be used to on other Corfu beaches. In Kassiopi, the ground is predominantly smooth white pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves. These pebbles, which we describe as 'coarse' due to their size and texture, give the beach a distinctive look and a very pleasant feel underfoot. Walking barefoot is perfectly feasible and, in fact, very pleasant, although water shoes or sandals can be useful for the more sensitive or for exploring the rocky areas.
The water is certainly the undisputed star of Kassiopi. Its shades range from a bright turquoise blue in the shallower areas to a deep indigo beyond the shore, constantly reminding us why Greek beaches are so famous. The transparency is such that we can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, making it a paradise for snorkeling. The waters are generally calm and warm, especially during the summer months, thanks to the protection offered by the small coves and the beach's location in a sheltered bay.
A Paradise for Swimmers and Snorkelers
The calmness of Kassiopi's waters makes it perfect for swimming, even for the less experienced. We can wade in gradually and enjoy a relaxing swim without worrying about strong currents. For us, however, the true charm lies in the opportunity to snorkel. With a mask and snorkel, we dive into a fascinating underwater world: small colorful fish, anemones, and rock formations that serve as home to various marine species. It's an activity we highly recommend for all ages.
