How to Get to Playa de Emplisi

Getting to Playa de Emplisi is part of the adventure and rewards us with spectacular views as we approach. Located just a few kilometers south of the charming port of Fiskardo, at the northern tip of Cephalonia, this cove is primarily accessible by car or scooter, giving us the freedom to explore the surroundings at our own pace.

From Fiskardo

If we are in Fiskardo, the journey is short and simple, although Cephalonia's roads are known for being narrow and winding. We take the road heading south from Fiskardo. After approximately 2-3 kilometers, we will see a sign, often discreet, indicating 'Emplisi Beach' or 'Paralia Emplisi'. The road to the beach is a small turn-off from the main road, paved but narrow in some sections, winding through ancient olive groves and dense cypress forests. It is a picturesque journey that gradually immerses us in the tranquility of the local nature.

From Other Parts of Cephalonia

If we are coming from the south of the island, such as Argostoli or Sami, the trip will be longer, taking between 1 and 1.5 hours, depending on the starting point. The route will take us through mountainous and coastal landscapes, offering us impressive panoramic views of the island. It is essential that we drive with caution, as Greek roads can be challenging, with tight curves and steep gradients. However, the reward at the end of the road, the sight of Playa de Emplisi, is well worth the effort.

Parking

Upon arriving at the beach, we will find an unpaved dirt parking area just behind the tree line. During the high season, especially in July and August, this parking lot can fill up quickly, so we always recommend arriving early in the morning to secure a good spot. There are no parking attendants or designated marked areas; it is a more informal and natural space, in keeping with the beach's atmosphere. From the parking lot, it is just a short walk of a few meters to the shore, allowing us to comfortably carry our belongings to the beach.

Public Transport

It is important to note that there is no regular public transport service that goes directly to Playa de Emplisi. Therefore, renting a car, motorbike, or even a quad is practically essential if we want to visit this cove and explore other wonders of Cephalonia. We can also opt for a taxi from Fiskardo, but this option can be more expensive if we plan several visits. For us, the freedom provided by our own vehicle is key to fully enjoying the island and its secret corners like Emplisi.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Emplisi, the traditional description of 'sand' doesn't quite fit, and that is precisely where much of its charm and uniqueness lies. Instead of fine or coarse sand, what we find here are white, polished pebbles, of varying sizes, covering the entire expanse of the cove. These pebbles, eroded by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, are smooth to the touch and shine under the Mediterranean sun, creating a dazzling contrast with the deep blue of the sea. Walking on them can be a bit uncomfortable for some, so we always recommend wearing water shoes or aqua socks to protect your feet and fully enjoy the experience, both in and out of the water.
