Stepping onto Playa de Achata is like discovering one of the best-kept secrets of the island of Karpathos, in Greece. Located on the island's east coast, about 14 kilometers north of Pigadia, the capital, this cove is a true sanctuary of peace and natural beauty. Upon arrival, we are greeted by a breathtaking landscape: imposing cliffs plunging into a sea of blue and green tones, a color palette that seems taken from a dream. This is not just any beach; it's a place where nature displays itself in its fullest expression, offering an unforgettable experience to every visitor.

The uniqueness of Playa de Achata lies in its mix of fine and coarse pebbles, polished by the waves, which give the water an astonishing clarity. The waters are so transparent that they invite you to dive in immediately, revealing a vibrant underwater world. How to Get to Playa de Achata

Getting to Playa de Achata is part of the adventure and, honestly, it's a journey worth taking for the views it offers. It's a relatively short distance from Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos, but the road is winding and mountainous, adding a touch of excitement to the excursion. We always recommend renting a car or a motorbike to get there, as this gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace and stop at the numerous viewpoints dotted along the road.

By Car or Motorbike

If we start from Pigadia, the journey to Playa de Achata takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on speed and the stops we make to admire the scenery. We'll take the road heading north, towards Aperi. As we progress, the signs for Achata become clearer. The last stretch of the road is a steep, winding descent, so caution is required when driving. However, the reward at the end of the road is immense: an improvised but functional parking area awaits us just before the beach, offering enough space for visitors' vehicles. It's important to remember that, although parking is free, it can fill up quickly in high season, so planning an early arrival can be a good strategy.

Public Transport and Other Options

Public transport in Karpathos is limited and does not reach directly to all the more remote beaches, and Playa de Achata is no exception. While there are buses connecting Pigadia with some nearby villages, there is no regular line that drops us off right at Achata beach. For this reason, the most practical option remains a private vehicle. Another alternative could be a taxi, but the cost would be considerably higher. For the more adventurous, some opt for hiking routes from nearby villages, but this is only recommended for experienced hikers and in times of milder temperatures, given the rugged terrain and lack of shade for much of the route. We, personally, prefer the comfort and flexibility of a car, which allows us to bring everything needed for a perfect beach day.

The 'Sand' and the Water

When talking about Playa de Achata, it's essential to highlight the uniqueness of its 'sand' and the purity of its waters, elements that distinguish it from many other beaches in Karpathos. Here we won't find the typical fine golden sand that characterizes other coasts, but a fascinating expanse of pebbles. These pebbles, of various sizes and shades ranging from white to dark gray, are the defining characteristic of the beach. They have been polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves over centuries, resulting in a surface that is smooth and pleasant underfoot, especially if we wear suitable sandals to move around comfortably.

The texture of these pebbles contributes significantly to the astonishing clarity of the water. With no fine sand particles in suspension, the sea at Playa de Achata is exceptionally transparent. We are amazed every time we visit by how easily we can see the seabed, even several meters deep. The colors of the water are a spectacle in themselves: a sublime gradation ranging from bright turquoise blue near the shore to a deep blue and emerald further out, where the sea meets the cliffs. This purity and chromatic richness make Achata an idyllic place for swimming and, above all, for snorkeling.

The waters here are usually calm and warm during the summer months, somewhat protected by the shape of the cove. This makes them a safe and welcoming place to swim, even for those who are not expert swimmers. The feeling of immersing yourself in these crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the majesty of the cliffs and the silence of nature, is a truly purifying experience. The pebbles continue underwater, forming an interesting seabed that is home to small fish and other marine creatures, adding extra appeal for lovers of the underwater world.
