How to Get to Playa de Mouros

Getting to Playa de Mouros is part of the adventure and, although it requires a little effort, the reward is incomparable. The beach is located in the southern part of the island of Amorgos, near the villages of Vroutsi and Arkesini. For us, the most comfortable way to access it is undoubtedly by rental car or scooter. Amorgos has a network of roads that, although winding and sometimes narrow, are well-maintained and offer spectacular views of the Aegean.

Once you take the main road that runs along the island, you should follow the signs to Mouros. You will find a small parking lot at the top of the hill, from where you will have to descend on foot. This path is a well-marked trail, although somewhat steep and with irregular steps, which will take you about 5-10 minutes. We advise wearing comfortable and secure footwear, as flip-flops can be slippery. It is not an access suitable for people with very limited mobility or baby strollers, but for the average traveler it is a pleasant walk that anticipates the beauty to come. Unfortunately, direct public transport options to this beach are very limited or non-existent, so your own vehicle is almost essential for exploring freely.

The Sand and Water

The particularity of Playa de Mouros lies in its type of ground: you will not find the typical fine, golden sand that many associate with Greek beaches, but rather an expanse of dark, polished pebbles. These small stones, in shades ranging from gray to black, give it a wild and authentic character, while contributing to the impressive clarity of its waters. Walking on them can be a bit uncomfortable at first, so water shoes or sandals are an excellent idea to protect your feet and fully enjoy the experience.

As we already mentioned, it has a parking lot at the top of the cliff. However, the most notable and appreciated service is the presence of a picturesque taverna, the 'Mouros Tavern', strategically located on the path to the beach or right above it. This taverna functions as a genuine chiringuito and restaurant at the same time.

Here, we have enjoyed delicious dishes of local Amorgian cuisine, always with spectacular views. The taverna usually offers umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, a blessing on the hottest days, allowing you to relax without worrying about the sun. It also has bathrooms/WC, an essential service that is often missing on more remote beaches. What you will not find are public showers, lifeguards, or large sports facilities. Mouros maintains its rustic charm and its focus on natural beauty, which, for us, is precisely part of its appeal. It is a perfect balance between necessary comfort and wild authenticity.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa de Mouros and Amorgos in general can greatly influence your experience. We always recommend late spring (late May and June) and early autumn (September and early October) as the best times. During these months, the weather is gloriously pleasant, with warm but not excessive temperatures, perfect for swimming and exploring. Furthermore, the island is less crowded than in the peak of summer, allowing you to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Mouros without crowds.

The summer (July and August) is, without a doubt, the high season. Temperatures are high and the island receives a greater number of visitors. Still, even in August, Mouros remains a fantastic option, as its location and foot access tend to disperse people, avoiding the overcrowding of other more accessible beaches.
