Introduction
As experts on the beaches of Pontevedra, we are always searching for those special corners that still retain their purest essence, and Playa de Melide is undoubtedly one of them. Located in the idyllic municipality of Cangas, in the heart of the Costa da Vela, this beach represents the most authentic and wild Galicia. It is not just any beach; it is a natural sanctuary where time seems to stand still, and the scenic beauty completely envelops us. For us, it is an essential destination for those who yearn to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature in its most pristine state.
When we talk about Playa de Melide, we are talking about a cove of fine white sand that blends with incredibly transparent turquoise blue waters. It is the kind of place we see on postcards, but here it becomes a tangible and palpable reality. Flanked by cliffs and native vegetation, it offers spectacular views towards the Cíes Islands and the Aldán Estuary, making it a natural viewpoint of incalculable value. Its semi-virgin character, away from large urban developments, is precisely what makes it so attractive to us and to all those seeking a more intimate and environmentally respectful beach experience. It is, in short, a treasure we love to share.
How to Get to Playa de Melide
Getting to Playa de Melide is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a confirmation of its somewhat secluded character. We always recommend taking the PO-315 road from Cangas towards O Hío and Cabo Home. Once we approach the Cabo area, we will find signs for the beach. Car access is not direct to the sand, which contributes to its conservation. There is a designated parking area nearby, although in high season, especially in July and August, it can be difficult to find a spot easily. Our recommendation is to arrive early to secure a good place.
From the parking area, the path to the beach is on foot via a well-marked trail. It is a pleasant and relatively short walk, about ten or fifteen minutes, which allows us to anticipate the beauty of the destination. The trail, although not excessively difficult, does have some irregularities, so we advise wearing comfortable and appropriate footwear. The walk through the coastal vegetation already gifts us the first impressive panoramic views, preparing our senses for what awaits us at the end of the journey. It is a small 'pilgrimage' that is worth every step.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Melide welcomes us with sand that is, without exaggeration, one of the finest and whitest we have found on the beaches of Pontevedra. It is a pleasure to walk barefoot on it, to feel its softness under our feet. The contrast of the pristine white sand with the intense green of the surrounding vegetation and the deep blue of the ocean creates a color palette that is pure visual poetry. It is sand that invites relaxation, to spread out our towel and simply enjoy the sun and sea breeze without interruptions.
But if the sand is exceptional, the water at Playa de Melide is simply spectacular. Its turquoise and emerald tones have nothing to envy from Caribbean beaches, and its clarity is such that it allows us to see the seabed with astonishing sharpness. The waters here are usually calm, somewhat protected by the shape of the cove, making them very pleasant for swimming. However, as is usual on the Galician coast, the water temperature is cool, especially outside the summer months, but refreshing and invigorating. For us, immersing ourselves in these crystal-clear waters is a purifying experience, a perfect way to feel the energy of the Galician Atlantic.
Services and Facilities
We always emphasize that the charm of Playa de Melide lies precisely in its semi-virgin character and the absence of an overabundance of services. We should not expect to find large tourist complexes or a long row of 'chiringuitos' here. This is a beach for those who value simplicity and connection with nature. However, this does not mean we are completely deprived. As mentioned, we have a nearby parking area, which is essential for access.
During the summer months, and seasonally, the beach usually has lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind when enjoying a swim, especially if we are with children. It is important to pay attention to the flags and follow the lifeguards' instructions, as although the waters are usually calm, the sea always deserves respect. Regarding other services, we might find a small kiosk or stand selling drinks and snacks near the parking area or on the access path during high season, but not directly on the sand. Our recommendation is to bring everything needed for the day: water, food, a sun umbrella, and sunscreen, so as not to depend on external services and to fully enjoy the natural experience offered by this wonderful beach in Cangas.
Best Time to Visit
For us, choosing the best time to visit Playa de Melide depends a lot on what we are looking for in our experience. If our priority is to enjoy the sun and swimming with the most pleasant temperatures, the months of July and August are undoubtedly ideal. During this period, the Galician climate gifts us long, sunny days, and the water temperature reaches its peak, making a dip irresistible. However, we must consider that, being high season, the influx of visitors is greater, and the parking can fill up quickly.
