Introduction
Welcome, travelers and lovers of the Galician coast! Today we embark on an imaginary journey to one of those corners that still preserve the essence of authenticity: Playa de Fedorento in the charming municipality of A Guarda, in the province of Pontevedra. If you're looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle, a place where time seems to stand still and nature is displayed in its purest state, you've found the perfect destination. This beach, although not as well-known as other large sandy beaches in the area, possesses a particular charm that makes it a true gem of the southern coast of Galicia.
Playa de Fedorento is a small hidden treasure between the ruggedness of the Atlantic and the exuberance of the A Guarda coastline. Its name, which evokes something 'fedorento' or 'stinky' in Galician, might sound a bit misleading, as, far from any negative connotation, we find ourselves before a beach of great beauty, where the fresh air and sea breeze are the true protagonists. It's a beach that invites disconnection, to stroll without haste, to feel the sand under our feet, and to contemplate the infinite horizon, with the Cíes Islands and the Portuguese coast in the distance. Its tranquil and family-friendly atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for those seeking peace and serenity, away from the crowds and bustle of more urban beaches. We, as beach tourism experts, know how to appreciate these small natural sanctuaries, and Fedorento is, without a doubt, one of them.
How to Get to Playa de Fedorento
Getting to Playa de Fedorento is relatively simple, although it requires a small detour from the main routes, which contributes to its more intimate and secluded atmosphere. We head to the south of the province of Pontevedra, to the municipality of A Guarda, a charming fishing village famous for its port and the majestic Monte Santa Trega. Once in A Guarda, we must follow the signs towards the coast, heading south. The beach is located near the mouth of the Miño River, very close to the border with Portugal.
Access by Car
The most comfortable access is by car. From the center of A Guarda, we take the PO-352 heading south. You need to pay attention to the turn-offs that will lead us to the beach area closest to the mouth of the Miño. While there is no formal, signposted parking lot for Playa de Fedorento, there are usually improvised parking areas or wide shoulders where you can leave your vehicle, especially outside the high season. It's advisable to arrive early on days with higher attendance to secure a good spot. Once parked, access to the sand is direct, via paths or small trails that gently descend to the sandy beach.
Public Transport
Public transport to the beach itself is limited. We can reach A Guarda by bus from Vigo or Tui, but once in the town, the most practical way to get to Playa de Fedorento would be to take a taxi or, if we're adventurous, take a pleasant walk, although the distance can be considerable depending on where we are in A Guarda. We always recommend the flexibility of your own vehicle to fully explore this beautiful area of Pontevedra beaches.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Fedorento welcomes us with fine, golden sand, very characteristic of Pontevedra beaches. It's a soft, pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for walking barefoot and feeling the connection with nature. The sandy stretch, approximately 180 meters long, allows us to always find a quiet corner to spread out our towel and enjoy the Galician sun. At the ends of the beach, the sand mixes with some rocky formations that add a wild and picturesque touch to the landscape, creating small coves and nooks that invite exploration.
The water at Playa de Fedorento is, as on most of the Galician Atlantic coast, of excellent quality. Its tones vary between blue and emerald green, reflecting the purity of its seabed. It's important to remember that we are on the Atlantic, so the water temperature is usually cool, even in the summer months. For us, this is part of its charm: a refreshing swim that revitalizes body and mind. The waters are usually calm, especially on days without much wind, making it suitable for a relaxed swim, although always with caution and mindful of currents.
Services and Facilities
As we've already mentioned, Playa de Fedorento is distinguished by its more natural and less developed character, which means services and facilities are more limited compared to larger, more touristy beaches. This is precisely one of the reasons we value it so much: it offers us a more authentic and less commercial experience.
Basic Services
- Parking: Although it's not an asphalted, signposted parking lot as such, there are informal areas nearby where we can leave our vehicle. We recommend prudence and respect for the environment when parking.
- Lifeguard Service: During the high summer season (July and August), it's common for the beach to have a lifeguard service to ensure the safety of swimmers. However, it's important to verify availability each year and always take extreme precautions.
