From the moment we catch a glimpse of Cala del Cañuelo, a sigh of admiration escapes our lips. How to Get to Cala del Cañuelo

The access to Cala del Cañuelo is part of its charm, as it helps maintain its semi-virgin and less crowded character. To reach this idyllic cove, the main route is via the old N-340 highway, which runs parallel to the coast. If we are coming from Nerja or Málaga, we must take the exit towards Maro and continue heading east. If, on the other hand, we are coming from Granada or Almuñécar, we will find it before reaching Maro.

Once we locate the signposted turnoff to the beach, we will find a winding path that descends to the shore. During the high season months, especially in summer, private vehicle access is usually restricted to preserve the natural environment and avoid congestion. In these cases, a shuttle bus service is provided from the upper parking area, which will conveniently drop us off at the beach for a modest fee. This option, besides being practical, allows us to enjoy the scenery without worries. If we prefer adventure, we can also choose to descend on foot, which will take about 15-20 minutes, offering us spectacular views along the way. It is important to remember that parking at the top is usually paid, a small investment to enjoy this paradise.

The Sand and Water

Cala del Cañuelo surprises us with a very particular physiognomy regarding its surface. Let's not expect a typical fine, golden sand beach; here, the composition is a fascinating mix of dark sand and small pebbles or stones. This characteristic, far from detracting from its appeal, gives it a more natural and authentic character. Walking barefoot on it is a different experience, and often, wearing water shoes proves very useful, especially for entering and exiting the water more comfortably.

But if there is something that truly captivates us about Cala del Cañuelo, it is certainly the quality of its waters. They are famous for their astonishing clarity and their shades ranging from bright turquoise to deep blue. • Chiringuitos: Generally, there are one or two chiringuitos right on the beach, like 'El Cañuelo' or similar, which offer us a delicious local gastronomic offer, from the ubiquitous 'pescaíto frito' to paellas and fresh salads. They are perfect for replenishing energy and enjoying a cold drink with sea views.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sunbeds: For those seeking extra comfort, the chiringuitos usually offer umbrella and sunbed rental services, allowing us to relax in the shade and fully enjoy the sun without worries.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: They are available, normally associated with the chiringuitos, allowing us to freshen up and maintain hygiene after a dip.
• Lifeguards: During the summer high season, the beach has lifeguard service, providing us with greater peace of mind and safety, especially if we are with children.
• Parking: As mentioned, the main parking is at the top, with a shuttle service in high season. Although it is paid, it is a convenience for accessing the beach.
