How to Get to Playa de Famara

Getting to Playa de Famara is an experience in itself, as we venture into a landscape that gradually becomes more volcanic and less urbanized. The beach is located on the northwest coast of Lanzarote, within the municipality of Teguise, and is easily accessible by car, which is, in fact, the most recommended means of transport for exploring the island.

From Lanzarote Airport (César Manrique), the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes. We always advise renting a car upon arrival, as it will give us the freedom to explore Famara and its surroundings at our own pace. The route usually passes through Arrecife or the interior of the island, heading north and then turning towards the west coast. The roads are in good condition and well signposted.

Once we approach the village of Caleta de Famara, we will see clear signs to the beach. There are several parking areas, both paved and unpaved, where we can leave our vehicle. It is important to remember that, as it is an extensive and natural beach, direct access to certain areas may require a short walk from the parking lot. However, the ease of parking is one of the advantages of this beach, even in high season, although we always recommend arriving early to secure a good spot.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Famara offers us sand of a pale golden hue, incredibly fine and soft to the touch, stretching for its six kilometers. Walking barefoot on it is a delight, feeling the sea breeze and the vastness of the landscape. This sand contrasts wonderfully with the deep blue of the Atlantic and the ochre tones of the Risco de Famara, creating a spectacular color palette, especially at sunset.

As for the water, it is crystal clear and of excellent quality, but we must be aware of its character. The waters of Famara are known for their strong waves and currents, making it a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, but not always the best option for a calm swim, especially for young children or inexperienced swimmers. We always advise taking extreme caution and respecting the instructions of lifeguards, if present, as well as the flag signage.

The water temperature is pleasant for most of the year, around 18-20°C in winter and 22-24°C in summer, typical of the beaches of Lanzarote. Even so, the force of the sea is constant. It is a beach to enjoy with respect, observing the skill of the surfers and the untamed beauty of the ocean, or to cool off cautiously at the shore. For those seeking a more serene swim, the natural pools that form in some areas at low tide can be a safer option, always with due attention.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Famara is, by its nature, a beach that prioritizes a pristine and wild environment over large tourist infrastructure. This means that direct services on the sand are limited, which is part of its charm and what makes it one of the most appreciated wild beaches of Lanzarote.

On the beach itself, the most notable service is the presence of lifeguards during the high season and in designated bathing areas. Their work is crucial given the strength of the waves and currents, and we always recommend following their advice. We also find ample and free parking areas, as mentioned, facilitating access to the beach.

However, if we are looking for more amenities, we should head to the nearby village of Caleta de Famara, which is a short walk or drive from the beach. Here we will indeed find a more complete offering:

• Chiringuitos and restaurants: Several establishments where we can enjoy fresh fish and local cuisine with sea views.
• Equipment Rental: Numerous surf schools and specialized shops offer board and wetsuit rentals and lessons for all levels, from beginners to advanced. It is the ideal place to start surfing or improve our technique.
• Small shops: To purchase basics, from sunscreen to souvenirs.
