How to Get to Playa de Castilla (Doñana)

Do not expect a direct, paved access road; part of its charm lies in that difficulty of access, which helps preserve its wild state. The most common way to access is through Matalascañas, the closest urban center and the only maritime gateway to Doñana National Park.

From Matalascañas, we can embark on a walk eastward, gradually entering the virgin beach. This walk will take us through a dune landscape and alongside the imposing facade of the El Asperillo cliffs. It is important to remember that we are in a National Park, so motor vehicle access directly onto the sand is strictly prohibited and regulated. For a more immersive experience, there are organized horseback riding routes that depart from the vicinity of Matalascañas. There are also guided 4x4 vehicle tours that cover specific areas of the National Park, although direct access to the beach is usually on foot from authorized points. We always recommend checking with the Doñana visitor centers about permitted routes and current regulations to ensure a safe and respectful visit.

Here you will not find beach bars, showers, or sun umbrellas and loungers. There are also no wooden walkways or parking areas directly on the beach. The philosophy of Playa de Castilla is that of a virgin space, where human intervention is minimal to preserve its ecosystem. Therefore, if we plan a day in this paradise, it is essential that we are completely self-sufficient. This means bringing with us everything we need: plenty of water, food, sun protection, and any other items we consider essential. It is of vital importance that we are extremely respectful of the environment, taking all our trash back with us and leaving the beach exactly as we found it. The nearest services, including restaurants, shops, and accommodations, are in Matalascañas, the adjacent urban center. From there we can stock up before embarking on our adventure, knowing that an experience of pure nature awaits us, without urban comforts, but with the reward of unparalleled beauty and absolute tranquility.

Choosing the right time to visit Playa de Castilla (Doñana) can make a difference in our experience. We consider spring and autumn to be the best times to explore this stretch of coast, especially if we want to enjoy nature at its peak without the summer crowds or extreme temperatures.

During spring (March to May), the days are long and sunny, but the temperatures are mild and pleasant, ideal for long walks on the sand or for exploring the nearby trails of the Park.
