How to Get to Playa de Vargas

Getting to Playa de Vargas is relatively straightforward, although it requires your own vehicle, as public transport does not go directly to the shore. We always recommend renting a car upon arrival in Gran Canaria, not only to access this beach but to explore the countless wonderful corners the island has to offer. From Gran Canaria Airport (Gando), the journey is very short, just about 10-15 minutes by car.

If we're coming from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we take the GC-1 motorway heading south. We need to take exit 21 (Variante de Arinaga/Agüimes). Once on the local road, the signage towards the Agüimes beach of Vargas is quite clear. The path will take us through semi-desert landscapes and salt flats, a preview of the natural atmosphere that awaits us. It has free parking areas, although not always paved, where we can leave our vehicle without a problem. On days with higher attendance, especially during competitions or sporting events, parking can be more challenging, but we generally find a spot easily. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is limited due to the nature of the terrain and the absence of specific infrastructure beyond the parking area.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Vargas is distinguished by its particular composition. Instead of the typical golden sand found on other Gran Canaria beaches, here we encounter a fascinating mix of dark volcanic sand and small pebbles or stones. This `sand_type` `mixed` and `ground_type` `mixed` gives it a rustic and authentic character. Walking barefoot on it is a different experience; the sand, although not fine like talcum powder, feels pleasant, and in some stretches, the pebbles offer a natural massage to our feet. It's important to keep this in mind if we're with small children or if we prefer beaches with exclusively sand.

As for the water, it's crystal clear and of an intense blue, reflecting the purity of the Atlantic. However, it's not a beach with calm waters. Due to its exposure to wind and ocean currents, the waves are usually moderate to strong, making it the perfect paradise for water sports, but perhaps less ideal for a quiet swim, especially if we're not used to these conditions. The water temperature is pleasant for most of the year, around 19-23 degrees Celsius, allowing for a refreshing dip after a sports session or simply to mitigate the Canarian sun's heat. We always recommend caution when swimming, paying attention to the flags and lifeguards' instructions, if present, as currents can be strong.

Services and Facilities

The philosophy of Playa de Vargas is to maintain its natural essence, so services and facilities are limited, but sufficient for the type of public that visits. Let's not expect to find the infrastructure of an urban or massive tourist beach here. However, the essential services to enjoy a day at the beach, especially for athletes, are usually covered.

• Parking: As mentioned, there are ample areas to park the car, although they are not paved and can be a bit uneven.
• Lifeguards: During the high season and periods of higher attendance, such as competitions or events, there is usually a lifeguard service, which gives us greater peace of mind. However, it's prudent not to be overconfident and always maintain caution, especially with the strong waves and currents.
• Equipment Rental: Given its sporting vocation, it's common to find surf, windsurf, or kitesurf schools in the vicinity or directly on the beach, which offer equipment rental and classes for all levels. This is a great advantage if we want to get started in these sports or if we don't want to travel with our own gear. It's advisable to check availability and prices in advance.
