We, as experts on the Spanish coasts, have had the pleasure of exploring Playa de las Dunas, a true treasure located in the charming municipality of Sant Pere Pescador, in the heart of the Costa Brava in Girona. This beach is not just a stretch of sand; it's a vibrant ecosystem, a sanctuary for nature lovers and a paradise for those seeking the adrenaline of water sports. Its name doesn't deceive: the imposing dunes that flank it are one of its most outstanding features, offering a landscape that changes with the wind and sunlight.

Playa de las Dunas is a place where nature shows itself in all its splendor, forming part of the Parque Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. Here, the sea breeze mixes with the scent of dune vegetation, creating a unique and relaxing atmosphere. It's an extensive beach, ideal for long walks, letting children play freely, or simply lying down and enjoying the sound of the waves. How to Get to Playa de las Dunas

Getting to Playa de las Dunas is relatively straightforward, and the options vary according to your preferences.

By Car

For us, the car is the most comfortable and flexible option. From Barcelona or the French border, the most direct route is to take the AP-7 motorway and then exit 4 (Figueres). Then, follow the signs to Sant Pere Pescador via the N-II and local roads. Once in the municipality, the signage to the beaches is clear. There are parking areas near the beach access points, some paid during high season, but with enough capacity to avoid problems. We recommend arriving early in summer to secure a good spot.

By Public Transport

If you prefer public transport, the main option is to take the train to Figueres (AVE or Regional) or Girona. From these cities, there are bus lines connecting to Sant Pere Pescador. Once in the town, the beach is within walking or cycling distance, although local taxi services also exist. It's a slower option, but ideal if you want to avoid the hassle of a car.

By Bicycle

For the more adventurous, the area offers excellent cycling routes connecting the town with the beach and the Natural Park. It's a wonderful way to enjoy the landscape before arriving to cool off in the sea.

The Sand and Water

When we set foot on Playa de las Dunas, the first thing we notice is its fine, golden sand. It's the kind of sand that invites you to walk barefoot, build sandcastles with the kids, or simply feel its warmth under the sun. The beach's expanse is impressive, ensuring we never feel crowded, even on the busiest summer days.

As for the water, that of Playa de las Dunas is clear and generally shallow near the shore, making it very safe for children. However, it's important to note that, due to its orientation and the frequent presence of the tramuntana (the north wind), the sea can have some waves, especially in the afternoons. This factor, far from being a drawback, is precisely what makes it a paradise for wind sports lovers. The transparency of its waters allows us to see the sandy bottom, inviting us for a refreshing swim.

Playa de las Dunas is a beach that, despite its natural and wild atmosphere in some stretches, is very well equipped to ensure the comfort and safety of its visitors. We highly value the presence of services that make the stay more pleasant:

• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has lifeguard posts and watchtowers, which gives us great peace of mind, especially when traveling with children.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: At various access points we find showers to rinse off the sand and clean, well-maintained toilets/WC.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: On the beach, especially in the busier areas, there are chiringuitos where we can have a drink, an ice cream, or enjoy a light meal with sea views. Some even offer more elaborate options, functioning as small beach restaurants.
• Sunbed and Umbrella Rental: For those who prefer to travel light, there are sunbed and umbrella rental services, allowing us to relax comfortably in the sun.
• Full Accessibility: The beach has access ramps and, in some points, wooden walkways that facilitate access for people with reduced mobility, including adapted services so everyone can enjoy the sea.
• Parking: As already mentioned, there are ample parking areas near the main access points.
• Sports Area: Given its fame for wind sports, it's no surprise to find specific areas for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with schools and equipment rental.
• Children's Area: Near the adjacent campsites, you can often find children's areas with playgrounds for the little ones.

Best Time to Visit

Playa de las Dunas is wonderful at any time of year, but the 'best' time depends on what you're looking for.
