How to Get to Playa de Gaztetape

Getting to Playa de Gaztetape is a simple and pleasant experience, whether we come by car or prefer public transport. Its location in the heart of Getaria makes it very accessible, and the options to reach it are varied, allowing us to choose the one that best suits our travel plan.

By Car

If we choose to drive, the main access route is the AP-8 motorway, which connects Bilbao with the French border, passing through San Sebastián. We should take the exit towards Zarautz/Getaria (exit 48) and then follow the signs for the N-634 towards Getaria. The journey from San Sebastián is approximately 25-30 minutes, and from Bilbao, about an hour. Once in Getaria, the beach is very close to the town center and the harbor. It is important to consider that, especially in high season, parking in Getaria can be a challenge. We recommend looking for the designated public parking lots, some of them underground, which usually have spaces available, though at a cost. There is a parking lot next to the harbor that leaves us just a few meters from the beach, which is a great advantage.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer to leave the car at home, public transport is an excellent alternative. The bus company Lurraldebus offers regular connections from the main cities of Gipuzkoa. We usually use the UK09 or UK10 line from San Sebastián (Donostia) or Zarautz, which drop us off directly in the center of Getaria. From the bus stop, a short walk of about 5 to 10 minutes will take us directly to Playa de Gaztetape. It is a pleasant walk that allows us to discover the town's streets and its maritime atmosphere before reaching the sand.

On Foot or by Bicycle

If we are already staying in Getaria or a nearby town like Zarautz, getting to Gaztetape on foot or by bicycle is a fantastic option. From the center of Getaria, the beach is a stone's throw away, easily accessible via the promenade that borders the harbor. For cycling enthusiasts, the Basque coast has sections of bidegorri (bike lanes) that connect different towns, offering scenic routes that culminate at this beautiful beach.

We do not find large rocks or pebbles that hinder walking, which makes it a very comfortable place to stroll, play, or simply lay out a towel and relax. The ground type is predominantly sand, ensuring a uniform and soft surface under our feet.

The Water: Calm, Clarity, and Freshness

The waters of Playa de Gaztetape are its most distinctive hallmark. Thanks to its location protected by the harbor breakwater and Mount San Antón, the currents and strong waves of the Cantabrian Sea barely affect it. This results in extraordinarily tranquil and serene waters, almost like those of a swimming pool, which makes it exceptionally safe for swimming, especially for young children or those who are not comfortable with large waves. We always highlight this characteristic as a key point for families.

In addition to its calmness, the clarity of the water is remarkable. Often, we can see the seabed at shallow depths, which is an indicator of its excellent quality. The water temperature, although it is the Cantabrian Sea, is usually pleasant in the summer months, allowing us to enjoy long, refreshing swims.
