How to get to Playa de Burumendi

Getting to Playa de Burumendi is part of the adventure, although it is quite accessible. This gem is located in the municipal area of Mutriku, very close to the border with Bizkaia, placing it in a privileged position on the Basque coast. For those of us coming by car, the most comfortable way to access it is via the N-634 road, which connects the main coastal towns. From Donostia/San Sebastián, we will take the A-8 towards Bilbao and then the N-634 towards Mutriku. If we are coming from Bilbao, we will also take the A-8 towards Donostia/San Sebastián and look for the exit towards Mutriku/Ondarroa.

Once we approach Mutriku, we will find signage guiding us to the beach. It's important to remember that Burumendi is a beach somewhat more removed from the urban center, which contributes to its wild character. Generally, there are parking areas, free or easily accessible, nearby, although in high season or on good weather days, they can fill up quickly. Our advice is to arrive early to secure a good spot and enjoy the day without rush.

For those who prefer public transport, there are bus lines connecting Mutriku with other towns in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. However, direct access to Burumendi beach by public transport may be more limited, and we might have to walk a stretch or consider a taxi from the center of Mutriku. The bicycle is another excellent option for the more athletic, as the area has cycling routes offering spectacular landscapes.

The sand and water

When we step onto Playa de Burumendi, the first thing that catches our attention is its genuine and untamed character. Here, sand is not the sole protagonist; the ground is a fascinating mix. We will find areas of mixed sand, with darker tones than Mediterranean beaches, interspersed with pebbles and rocks of various shapes and sizes. This combination gives it a very particular appearance and changes drastically with the tides. During low tide, the beach expands, revealing extensive sandy areas and rocky pools that invite exploration, while at high tide, the space reduces considerably, covering much of the sand and rocks.

Its waters are crystal clear and of an intense blue-green color, inviting a refreshing swim or the practice of water sports. However, it is important to be attentive to currents and waves, as they can be strong, especially on days with rough seas. That's why the presence of lifeguards in high season is essential and provides us with additional peace of mind to enjoy the sea safely.

This means that the services and facilities are more focused on the essentials, maintaining the wild essence of the place. Let's not expect to find massive tourist infrastructure here, but just what is necessary to enjoy a day at the beach.

One of the most important services, which we have already mentioned, is parking. Generally, there are parking areas near the beach, which facilitates access by private vehicle. It's a basic but crucial service, especially for a beach with access somewhat removed from the urban center. However, on days of high attendance, these areas can fill up, so we recommend arriving in advance.

Regarding hygiene, there are usually basic showers, often outdoors, so we can rinse off the salt and sand before heading home. They are not luxury facilities, but they serve
