Introduction

From the moment we set foot on the west coast of Fuerteventura, we understand why this island is so special. And if there is one place that perfectly embodies the wildest and most authentic essence of the 'Isla Majorera', it is Playa de la Pared. Here, the Atlantic shows itself in all its splendor, powerful and majestic, sculpting a landscape of untamed beauty that captivates us from the very first instant.

Playa de la Pared, located in the municipality of Pájara, is much more than a simple stretch of sand; it is a sanctuary for those seeking a connection with nature in its purest state. Known mainly as one of the best surf spots in Fuerteventura, this beach offers us a different experience from the tranquil coves of the east. Here we will not find large hotel complexes right on the beach or crowds, but an infinite horizon, the constant sound of the waves, and an atmosphere of peace that invites reflection and adventure.

How to get to Playa de la Pared

Getting to Playa de la Pared is relatively straightforward, although we will venture into an area that feels more remote. The key is to have a rental car, something we always recommend for exploring Fuerteventura at our own pace. From the main points on the island, the directions are clear:

From Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) and Puerto del Rosario

If we arrive by plane, the journey from the airport or from the capital, Puerto del Rosario, will take approximately one hour. We must take the FV-2 heading south, towards Morro Jable. We will pass through Gran Tarajal and, before reaching Costa Calma, we will find a well-signposted turnoff towards La Pared (FV-605). Once in La Pared, we will follow the signs to the beach.

From Costa Calma

From Costa Calma, the journey is much shorter, about 15-20 minutes. We will take the FV-605 heading north, towards La Pared. It is a scenic road that offers us wonderful views of Fuerteventura's semi-desert landscape. Upon reaching the village of La Pared, the beach is a short distance away, well signposted.

From Morro Jable

If we are staying in the far south, Morro Jable, the trip is about 30-40 minutes. We will follow the FV-2 heading north and, after passing Costa Calma, we will take the turnoff to La Pared (FV-605). It is a comfortable route with good views.

The final access to the beach from the village of La Pared is via a dirt track which, although passable with a normal car, requires a bit of caution. There are informal parking areas near the beach, which makes it easy to arrive with our surf gear or simply with a towel and backpack.

The sand and the water

Playa de la Pared welcomes us with an extensive stretch of fine golden sand, which contrasts wonderfully with the intense blue of the ocean and the ochre tones of the surrounding cliffs. It is a soft and pleasant sand under our feet, ideal for long walks or simply for lying down and feeling the caress of the Majorero sun. The length of the beach, which stretches for more than a kilometer, guarantees us plenty of space to find our private spot, even on the busiest days.

The water, on the other hand, is the true protagonist here. We are in the open Atlantic, and it shows. The waters of Playa de la Pared are crystal clear, with shades ranging from light turquoise at the shore to deep blue offshore. However, we must not forget that we are in an area of strong waves. The currents can be intense, so we always recommend taking extreme caution and, if we are not familiar with these types of conditions, limiting ourselves to areas where there are lifeguards or staying close to the shore.

The water temperature in Fuerteventura is quite constant throughout the year, ranging between 18°C and 23°C. For surfers, this temperature is ideal, although many opt for a light wetsuit for greater comfort and protection. For swimmers, it may feel a bit cool at first, but we quickly get used to it and enjoy a refreshing and invigorating swim.

Services and facilities

Unlike other more urbanized beaches, Playa de la Pared maintains a rustic and natural charm, which means that services and facilities are more limited, but perfectly adequate for the type of experience we seek here. Precisely, this 'lack' of mass tourism is part of its appeal.

Among the services we can find, we highlight:

• Parking: Although it is not an asphalted and signposted parking lot as such, there are large informal parking areas just before reaching the sand and in the village of La Pared itself. We will always find a place to leave our vehicle.
• Restaurants/Chiringuitos: On the cliff overlooking the beach, with spectacular views, there is at least one well-known restaurant ('La Pared Restaurante') that offers local food, especially fresh fish, and is an ideal place to recharge or enjoy a drink while watching the sea. It has bathrooms/WCs for customers.
• Lifeguards: During the high season and in the months with the highest influx of surfers, there is usually a lifeguard service, given the characteristics of the waves. It is always advisable to check for the presence of lifeguards and follow their instructions.
• Surf Schools and Equipment Rental: La Pared is a surfing epicenter, so we will find several surf schools in the village that offer lessons for all levels and, of course, board and wetsuit rentals. This is essential if we want to start in this sport or if we are traveling without our own equipment.
