If there is one place in Fuerteventura that has stolen our hearts with its authenticity and unique charm, it is undoubtedly Playa de Gran Tarajal. Away from the large tourist resorts and the hustle and bustle of the island's more developed areas, this beach in the municipality of Tuineje presents itself as a refuge of tranquility and local life. Don't expect the typical Caribbean white sands often associated with Fuerteventura beaches, but a different beauty, a distinct personality marked by its dark, volcanic-origin sand, which contrasts perfectly with the intense blue of its waters and the white of the village houses.

For us, visiting Playa de Gran Tarajal is immersing ourselves in the true Majorera essence. Here, time seems to slow down, and the rhythm is set by the tide and the daily life of its inhabitants. It's a beach that invites leisurely enjoyment, connection with the surroundings, and observation of local life. Its waters, protected by the harbor and the orientation of the bay, are extraordinarily calm, making it an idyllic destination for families, couples, or anyone seeking a break from routine and a safe swim in a natural and well-maintained setting.

How to Get to Playa de Gran Tarajal

Getting to Playa de Gran Tarajal is really simple, which adds an extra point to its appeal. It is located on the southeast coast of Fuerteventura, in the municipality of Tuineje, and is perfectly connected by road. The main access route is the FV-2, which runs the length of the island from north to south. If we are coming from the north (Puerto del Rosario) or the center (Antigua), we simply follow this road south until we find the signage for Gran Tarajal. From the south (Morro Jable), it is also a direct journey on the same FV-2 heading north.

Once in the town, access to the beach is intuitive. Playa de Gran Tarajal stretches along the promenade, and finding parking is usually not a problem, even in high season, as there are several free parking areas nearby and on the streets adjacent to the seafront. We have always found a spot easily. For those who prefer public transport, Gran Tarajal has several bus lines (guaguas) connecting it to the island's main towns, such as Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable. It's a comfortable and economical option for getting around and enjoying the scenery without worries. The bus stop is just a few minutes' walk from the shore, which greatly facilitates arrival and departure.

The Sand and Water

While many Fuerteventura beaches are famous for their stretches of white sand, Playa de Gran Tarajal surprises us with a different and unique beauty: its sand is dark, an almost blackish-grey tone, a product of the island's volcanic origin. It is fine sand, very pleasant to the touch, which does not get excessively hot under the sun, allowing for barefoot walks without burning. This characteristic gives it a unique character and a spectacular visual contrast with the turquoise blue of its waters. For us, it is part of its identity and charm.

The waters of Playa de Gran Tarajal are, in a word, wonderful. They are extremely calm and crystal clear, almost like a natural swimming pool. The bay in which the beach is set is very protected from currents and the strong waves that sometimes hit other areas of the island, thanks to the breakwater of the marina which acts as a natural barrier. This makes it an ideal place for safe swimming, especially for the little ones or for those who simply want to relax floating without worries. The water temperature is pleasant all year round, allowing for a dip in any season. The clarity of the water also invites observing marine life with simple snorkeling gear; although it's not an area with spectacular reefs, there are always small fish to see near the shore or the rocks.

• Full Accessibility: An aspect we greatly value is its accessibility. It has ramps and walkways that facilitate access to the sand, and sometimes even amphibious chairs for people with reduced mobility, allowing everyone to enjoy the sea.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: There are rental points for sun loungers and umbrellas, perfect for those who prefer not to carry their own equipment and want a more comfortable beach day.
