How to Get to Playa de las Arenas

Getting to Playa de las Arenas is relatively easy, making it an accessible destination for most travelers. If we come by car, the A-8 highway (Autovía del Cantábrico) is our best ally. We must take exit 269 towards Pesués and follow the signs that will lead us directly to Val de San Vicente and, subsequently, to the beach. The journey from Santander or Bilbao is comfortable and well signposted.

Once near the beach, we will find several parking areas that, although they can fill up on the busiest days in mid-summer, usually offer enough space for most visitors. We always recommend arriving early during the high season to secure a good spot. Access from the parking lot to the sand is easy and has walkways, which facilitates transit with baby strollers or beach equipment. As for public transport, options are more limited; the most practical way is to arrive by car, which will give us greater freedom to also explore the surroundings.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de las Arenas is, as its name indicates, its sand. It is a fine, golden sand that invites walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying down to sunbathe. It's a soft sand to the touch, which doesn't get excessively hot and is very comfortable for the whole family. This quality of sand is, for us, a key factor that elevates the beach experience.

As for the water, Playa de las Arenas benefits from its location and morphology, offering generally calm and shallow waters at the shore, which makes it exceptionally safe for bathing, especially for children. The water color ranges from greenish-blue to turquoise, with a transparency that allows us to see the sandy bottom. The water temperature, typical of the Cantabrian Sea, is refreshing in summer, perfect for combating the summer heat. Water quality is guaranteed by the usual presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that gives us peace of mind knowing we are in a clean and well-maintained environment.

During these months, temperatures are warmer, sunshine hours are longer, and all beach services are operational. It's when the beach comes to life, with families, groups of friends, and couples enjoying its benefits.

However, if we prefer tranquility and a more relaxed atmosphere, we recommend visiting in spring or autumn. During these months, the influx of visitors is much lower, allowing us to enjoy long walks along the shore in solitude, breathe the fresh air, and contemplate the beauty of the landscape in peace.
