How to get to Playa de Karraspio

Getting to Playa de Karraspio is relatively easy, and the transport options are varied, which facilitates access for all visitors. The beach is located in the municipality of Mendexa, very close to Lekeitio, making it very accessible from this popular coastal town. We always recommend planning the route in advance, especially during high season, to ensure a hassle-free arrival.

By car

The most comfortable way for most is, without a doubt, by car. From Bilbao, we will take the AP-8 towards San Sebastián and then the exit towards Gernika/Lekeitio. Once on the BI-2238, we will follow the signs to Lekeitio and, before entering the town, we will find the turnoffs towards Mendexa and the beach. From San Sebastián, the route is similar, taking the AP-8 towards Bilbao and then the BI-638 towards Ondarroa and Lekeitio. The beach has a public parking lot, although on the busiest days it can fill up quickly, so arriving early is a good strategy. It's important to remember that in summer it may be paid or have restrictions.

By bus

For those who prefer public transport, Bizkaibus offers lines connecting Lekeitio with Bilbao (line A3512) and other nearby towns. Once in Lekeitio, it is possible to take a local bus that connects with Mendexa and the beach area, or even a taxi. The walk from the center of Lekeitio to Karraspio is also a pleasant option, about 20-30 minutes, which allows us to enjoy the coastal landscape and the views of the Lea estuary.

Other means

If we are cycling enthusiasts, the area offers beautiful routes that take us to Karraspio. It's a fantastic way to combine exercise and tourism. The proximity to Lekeitio also allows us to arrive on foot, enjoying a walk along the estuary, which adds a special charm to the experience of reaching this beautiful beach.

Its length, approximately 350 meters, varies significantly with the tides, sometimes revealing wide areas for games and relaxation, and other times a more sheltered and cozy space. It's the kind of sand that gently sticks to the skin, easy to shake off, and perfect for a worry-free beach day. We highly value this characteristic, as it contributes to an overall feeling of cleanliness and comfort.

The water

The waters of Karraspio are a mirror of the Lea estuary, which gives them a particular character. They are generally calm waters, with moderate waves that make them ideal for safe swimming, especially for children and those who are not comfortable with the strong waves of the Cantabrian Sea. This tranquility is partly due to the natural protection provided by the estuary mouth and its orientation. The water temperature, typical of the Cantabrian, is refreshing in summer and a bit cooler in spring and autumn, but always inviting for the brave.
