How to Get to Playa de Atxabiribil

Getting to Playa de Atxabiribil is relatively straightforward, and it's one of the strong points that makes it so accessible and popular. We always value the ease of reaching our beach destination, and Sopela offers several options to make the visit comfortable for everyone.

By Car

If we choose to drive, the beach in Sopela is very well connected. From Bilbao, the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. We need to take the BI-637 and then turn off towards Sopela. Once in the municipality, the signage towards the Arrietara-Atxabiribil beaches is quite clear. Near the beach, we'll find several parking areas, both free and paid, especially during the high season. It's advisable to arrive early on busy days, as the car parks tend to fill up quickly. We usually look for the parking areas closest to the beach to avoid long walks with all our beach gear.

By Public Transport

One of the great advantages of this beach in Bizkaia is its excellent public transport connection. The Bilbao Metro reaches Sopela, making it a very convenient and eco-friendly option. The Sopela metro station (Line 1) is a reasonable distance from the beach. From there, we can:

• Walk: It's a pleasant 15-20 minute walk downhill, allowing us to enjoy the town's atmosphere before reaching the sand.
• Take the local bus: During the summer months and on weekends, there is usually a shuttle bus service connecting the metro station with Sopela's beaches, including Atxabiribil. It's a fantastic option if we're carrying a lot or prefer not to walk.

The Sand

The sand at Atxabiribil is predominantly fine and golden in tone, very pleasant to the touch. It stretches across a considerable area, especially at low tide, offering ample space to lay out a towel, build sandcastles with the little ones, or simply walk barefoot. We love the feeling of walking on this sand, which is compact enough for easy walking, yet soft and clean. The ground type is clearly sandy, which facilitates access and overall enjoyment of the beach. The expanse of sand means that even on very busy days, we can always find a spot where we feel comfortable and have enough space.

The Water

The waters of Playa de Atxabiribil are known for their cleanliness and quality, which has earned it the Blue Flag distinction on numerous occasions. This gives us great peace of mind, knowing we are swimming in a cared-for and monitored environment. The water temperature, typical of the Cantabrian Sea, can be a bit cool, especially outside the summer months, but it is incredibly refreshing and invigorating. For surf lovers, this temperature is not a hindrance, as a wetsuit is a great ally.

What really characterizes the waters of Atxabiribil are its waves. It's a beach in Sopela famous for its breaks, making it a magnet for surfers. The waves are consistent and varied, suitable for both beginners taking their first steps and more experienced surfers looking for challenges. We always enjoy watching the surfers' skill, and for those of us who dare, the thrill of riding a wave here is unmatched. Even with waves, in areas closer to the shore and on calmer sea days, children can enjoy safe swims under the watchful eye of lifeguards.
